This long horseshoe nail has been converted from a pin and hangs from an oval bail like a dagger. The pointed shape of the nail connotes power, while the piece also expresses delicacy with the intricate hand-engravings of a flower and scrolling foliate. The dynamic is compelling, and the engravings are mesmerizing to look at, clearly done by a master, their details emphasized by a beautiful patina. Though unmarked, we suspect the piece was most likely made by L. Fritzsche, circa 1908, a jeweler who was known for a horseshoe bracelet with similar engravings as this one, and who was responsible for much of the equestrian jewelry created at that time. The pedant weighs 2.5 grams. It measures 2 1/2” in length, not including the 5.3 x 7.5 mm bail. It is 3/8” wide at the top, and 1/16” wide at the bottom. It acid tests as 14k. Emblematic of the popularity of equestrian jewelry, this piece also denotes power, accomplishment, strength, and skill.
