This is an exquisite antique Art Deco Love Token Pendant Inscribed "Qu'Hier Que Demain" with a Diamond set plus sign, and Channel-set Ruby minus sign with a Ruby halo meaning "more today, but less than tomorrow." The love token pendant necklace is from the estate of Hollywood Legend Mary Lou Daves and was a gift from her husband, the director Delbert Daves. Ms. Daves' jewelry exemplified her exquisite taste. Her jewels were unique, dramatic and elegant. The pendant is made and signed by the French maker A. Augis. The quote "more today but less than tomorrow" is a reference to a French poem by Rosemonde Gerard called 'Les Vieux' and comes from the sentence translating to 'And because I love you more and more each day, today more than yesterday but less than tomorrow.' The quality of the fine red Rubies in the pendant is the very finest. They are a brilliant fire engine red color. Their cut is a stunning faceted rectangular emerald cut and they are beautifully channel set around the pendant and within the minus sign. The antique rubies are so very desirable today and these are some of the finest you will find. The pendant exudes the delicacy and romance of the Art Deco era. It is a rare early jewel with fabulous rubies and diamonds and exquisite design and a magnificent token of love. Provenance: The pendant is from the Bel Air estate of Delmer and Mary Lou Daves where a who's who of Hollywood legends (Cole Porter entertained guests at the piano) were entertained and was a gift to Mary Lou from her husband. Their love story began on the set of the 1938 film, "Professor Beware." As a successful contract writer for Warner Bros., Delmer Daves wrote the screenplay and wanted to visit the set to see how things were going. 19-year-old, Mary Lawrence was cast as the Bride. He was instantly smitten. "So you're playing the bride? I wish you would marry me," he quipped. "I shall answer you with the same spirit you asked me. Of course I will be yours forever." The two were married for 39 years, had three children and a lifetime of adventures. His career spanned 40 years during which he wrote and/or directed 80 movies including: Love Affair (1939), Destination Tokyo (1943) , Hollywood Canteen (1944), Dark Passage (1947), Broken Arrow (1950), Birds of Paradise (1951), The Last Wagon (1956), An Affair to Remember (1957), 3:10 to Yuma (1957), Cowboy (1958), A Summer Place (1959), The Hanging Tree (1959) He was a genius, renaissance man, student and tinkerer. She had an enduring acting career in film and television and became an author in her later years rallying her famous friends to share their thoughts on famous art works in, "Lovers: 100 Works of Art Celebrating Romantic Love..." She was a lover of art, family, beauty, traveling, entertaining, fashion and many causes. The pendant is 1 3/8 inches (36mm) long including the bales. The pendant is 1 inch (26mm) in diameter.
