Late Victorian Rose Cut Diamond Onyx 14 Karat Gold Locket Pendant
About the Item
A beautiful Late Victorian onyx and diamonds mourning locket pendant. On top, the locket pendant is embellished with silver flowers and leaves which are set with rose cut diamonds. The onyx is oval-shaped and is being held by a 14 karat gold bail. A hinged glass plate is set on the back, it opens and closes well. Behind the glass a lock of hair has been placed, this is usually a keepsake of a loved one.
Onyx jewelry were mostly worn in The Grand Victorian Era, between ca. 1861-1880. Saddens by the death of the Queen’s husband, Prince Albert, mourning became an art for the Victorians. Who designed black clothes and jewelry to be worn in the months following the death of a relatives. This mourning tradition was adopted in several countries, as well in the Netherlands.
The onyx pendant is in very good condition and measures 55 mm in length from bail to bottom and 33 mm wide. The pendant weighs 20 grams. Hallmarks are present and visible at the bail.
