Manuel Carbonell 925 Sterling Silver Florida Panther Pendant Brooch Cuban Artist

About the Item

This is an exceptionally rare pendant crafted by renown sculptor and artist Manuel Carbonell from the island of Cuba. Regarded as the greatest Cuban sculptor of his generation, Manuel Carbonell studied at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes "San Alejandro" in Havana, Cuba. He was friends and worked along with the most prestigious artists of his generation, including Wilfredo Lam and Agustin Cardenas. Due to the Cuban exile, Carbonell moved to New York City in 1959 and continued his exceptional work until his death at the age of 93 in Coral Gables, Florida. His sculptures are exhibited in the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library, The Miami River Bridge, and countless locations around the world. This particular pendant is part of a collection Carbonell created in the 1970s, stemming from his interest in jewelry and furniture design. The collection features different motifs of wildlife found in the state of Florida. This beautiful example depicts a Florida golden panther prowling in the dense brush of the Florida Everglades. It is crafted as a heavy rectangular bar of sterling silver, and features an ornate bail in the shape of a curved feather. A very basic pin clasp is installed, enabling wear as a brooch. However, we recommend strictly wearing it as a pendant, as the pin clasp is quite rudimentary. There are some light markings on the surface consistent with age and use. However, this wonderful piece of art remains in very good condition, and ready to wear. The pendant is hand signed "M. Carbonell" on the back, and contains an edition number of 3/1250. We suspect the edition was not fully realized, as there are no other examples available or previously purchased in the market. Carbonell typically crafted jewelry by commission only, and as a result, they are exceptionally rare and beautiful works of art. Please scroll below for size and weight details.
