Renaissance Gold Agate Cameo Pendant of Giuliano de' Medici, c. 1530
About the Item
This precious pendant dates to around 1530 and is composed of an agate cameo in shades of greyish-brown, which is inserted inside a contemporary yellow gold frame and characterised by external granulation work. The cameo, however, features the face of Giuliano de Medici, Duke of Nemours and son of Lorenzo the Magnificent, whose facial features can be seen in Michelangelo's funerary monument in the New Sacristy in the church of San Lorenzo in Florence. Looking at the face, is evident the exceptional incisional quality, clear in the defined stroke that describes the curls of the hair, as well as the attention to the definition of the eyes, nose and mouth. The Renaissance cameo, preserved in excellent condition, constitutes a precious example of the Florentine manufacture with which it was intended to pay homage to the Lords of Florence, testifying not only to the great engraving skills demonstrated in the agate but also to the goldsmith's skill evident in the granulated gold setting.
