He was the last of the rulers known as the Five Good Emperors, and the last emperor of the Pax Romana, an age of relative peace and stability for the Roman Empire. He served as Roman consul in 140, 145, and 161. Marcus was born during the reign of Hadrian to the emperor's nephew, the praetor Marcus Annius Verus (III), and his wife, the heiress Domitia Lucilla. In turn, Antoninus adopted Marcus and the son of Aelius, Lucius (later to rule as Emperor Lucius Verus alongside Marcus). Hadrian died that year and Antoninus became emperor. Now heir to the throne, Marcus studied Greek and Latin under tutors such as Herodes Atticus and Marcus Cornelius Fronto. He kept in close correspondence with Fronto for many years afterwards. Marcus married Antoninus' daughter Faustina in 145. Antoninus died following an illness in 161. - Ancient Roman Republic 1st Century BC Griffin Coin Diamond 18K Gold PendantBy Steven BattelleLocated in Soquel, CAAn interesting, authentic, silver denarius coin from the period of the Roman Republic in 79 BCE, featuring a griffin leaping, is set in a Steven Battelle ancient inspired handmade matte-finish textured bezel mount with 1.8mm VS1 diamond accent. The denarius was approximately the daily wage of a soldier in ancient Rome. This particular type of coin is known as a denarius serratus. The ragged edges of the coin are intentional (all coins of this type have them) to show that coin is pure silver. The minting of the coins was an annual office shared by 3 men, and they often placed the family name on the coins. This coin was minted by moneyer L. Papius, who was probably from Lanuvium, which was about 19 miles outside of Rome. The reverse side of the coin displays...Category
