VICTORIAN STYLE
The reign of Queen Victoria encapsulates a quickly evolving period of history — and jewelry styles were no exception. No single period has seen such a diverse group of jewelry attributed to it than the Victorian era. Today, there is a vast collection of authentic antique Victorian jewelry and watches on 1stDibs.
Victorian jewelry is named after Queen Victoria, whose reign lasted from 1837 to 1901, making her the second longest-ruling monarch. (She was surpassed by Queen Elizabeth II in 2015.) During this time, different styles of fashion and jewelry came and went. Thanks to our fascination with royalty and swoon-worthy melodramas like Netflix’s The Crown — which is rife with evocative fashion, jewelry and interiors — and the 2017 feature film Victoria & Abdul, we are all familiar with her story. After the death of Victoria’s father and three childless uncles, she ascended to the throne at age 18. In 1840, Queen Victoria married the love of her life, her first cousin Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.
Queen Victoria loved serpentine jewels, and she had even more power to shape trends than Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle do today. The British monarch’s best-known piece in this mold is the gold coiled-snake engagement ring she received from Prince Albert — the sinuous reptile was considered a symbol of everlasting love.
The Queen's 63-year reign has been divided by historians into the Romantic period, the early happy years, circa 1837–60; the Grand period, marked by the deaths of the Queen’s mother and husband, circa 1860–80; and the late Victorian or Aesthetic period, which lasted from about 1880 until 1901 and ushered in the Belle Époque. Queen Victoria wore her heart on her sleeve, and her fashion and jewelry reflected her emotions.
Romantic period jewelry, which featured common decorative motifs and was embellished with seed pearls, coral and turquoise, was a celebration of the young monarch’s love. Everything changed with the death of Prince Albert, and the Grand period is most often associated with mourning jewelry. Jewelry was smaller, lighter and more dainty during the late Victorian period. During this era, diamonds came into fashion, and semiprecious gems such as amethysts and opals became prevalent, too. Using gemstones for their natural beauty and not their worth was something that jewelers of the era felt passionate about, and this ideology would really become relevant in Art Nouveau jewelry.

Victorian Diamond Double Heart and Bow Luckenbooth Silver Upon Gold Pendant

A Victorian diamond set, Luckenbooth double witches' heart pendant, with rose cut diamonds set in the two hearts and bow, weighing an estimated total of 1.50ct, in grain and cut down settings, mounted in silver-upon-gold. Circa 1880.
Luckenbooth brooches are traditional Scottish love tokens. They are usually a heart shaped brooch, often with a crown or coronet above one heart, or two intertwined hearts, with similar motifs to the Claddagh ring. European Heart-shaped brooches date back to late medieval period but this design probably did not appear in Scotland before the 17th century. It became very popular in the 19th century, featuring in the ranges of Scottish manufacturing jewellers, for the Highland outfitter and tourist trades. They are typically made of silver, although gold heart brooches were made for wealthy people and may be engraved or set with stones.
The name comes from the Luckenbooths of Edinburgh. Luckenbooth is a Scots word for a lockable stall or workshop. Originating in the 15th century, they were the city's first permanent shops, situated on the Royal Mile near St. Giles Cathedral. Initially housing mainly silversmiths and goldsmiths. They were demolished in 1817.
The brooches were often given as a betrothal or wedding gift. It might have been worn as a charm, by a nursing mother to help her milk flow or be pinned to a baby’s clothing. It was also known as a witch-brooch to protect children from evil.

Circa the 1870’s, this diamond encrusted arrow has been converted from a pin into a pendant that can be worn in a variety of ways. The arrow contains 32 natural Rose Cut diamonds that vary in shape and size, from round to oblong. Each diamond catches the light in a unique way, and the intricate details of the hand carved antique stones are mesmerizing. The quills of the feather are delineated, with space between each quill that reveals its careful workmanship. The age of this piece and its rustic, handcrafted quality gives it a beautiful naïveté.
The arrow is a strong symbol of direction and sacrifice. It brings to mind St. Sebastian and stories of miracles and martyrdom. It can also be worn to represent momentum, movement, and protection.
The pendant has a silver front and 14k gold back. We added half-bails to both ends of the pendant so that the arrow can be worn pointing up or down, or could be used as a chain extender.
The pendant contains approximately .5 of a carat of diamonds. The 32 natural Rose Cut diamonds range from 2 mm to 1.25 mm. The arrow measures 2 3/16” x 9/16”. It weighs 4.2 grams. It is unmarked but acid tests as silver and 14k gold.

This is a spectacular antique Victorian - Belle Epoque Butterfly Pendant or Brooch set throughout with Rose Cut Diamonds, Pearls and Rubies in a gorgeous open work design in Silver atop 14 Karat Yellow Gold. This is one of the most beautiful Butterfly Insect jewels we have seen. The Butterfly has a detachable brooch pin on the reverse which can be easily unscrewed to convert the jewel to a pendant necklace. The Butterfly is set throughout its wings with Rose Cut Diamonds. Each diamond is set within its own open work section. The sections are then combined into a fully three dimensional butterfly with exquisite craftsmanship and artistry. In the center of the body are four stunning silvery white pearls which may be natural. The eyes of the insect are two round Ruby cabochons. The diamonds and pearls are set in silver as was the custom of the period in order to show off the diamonds to greater brilliance. The butterfly wings are masterworks of jewelry making and diamond setting. The extraordinary jewels are all set "a jour" - open backed - so that the light is allowed to filter through the gems and make them sparkle with the wonderful quality we love in the antique jewels. For sale a delicate diamond and pearl pendant, featuring a beautiful floral design. The pendant is dated back to the mid 19th century, circa 1850s, the Victorian era.
The four leaves in the center are decorated with 12 diamonds in rose cut style. They are set on a quilloché enamel patterns in vibrant green color. The bezel is integrated into a delicate white enamel. The frame of the pendant is made of another 12 rose cut diamonds; The total estimated weight of the diamonds is approximately 0.6ct. The diamonds are mounted first on silver and then backed with 18K yellow gold, which is typical to the Victorian era. The pearl at the bottom measures 5mm in diameter. It shows a very good luster and has a mirror like surface.
