Snake symbolism is as old and romantic as time. Some cultures see the snake as the concept of good and evil or fertility and rebirth. Egyptians believed serpents represented royalty and deity. The Romans, and later Queen Victoria herself, saw the snake as a symbol of everlasting love. Prince Albert presented Queen Victoria with her emerald set snake engagement ring in 1840. Soon thereafter, jewelry designers followed suit and snake motifs were found in rings, brooches, necklaces, earrings and more. Snake jewelry continues to represent wisdom, eternity, and love. A memorial necklace like this was made to remember a loved one, as it is locket backed with a lock of hair – the original way to hold the memory of a lost one before photography. This antique Victorian gold and enamel memorial snake necklace was handcrafted in England, around 1851. It features a 15 karat gold snake twisting around a bright vibrant blue enameled heart, the pendant hangs from a 9 karat gold snake link chain. The back of the pendant is engraved, “From W & H.C. Tuesday 16: Dec 1851”. The period chain is 16 inches long and closes with a barrel clasp.
