Victorian Holbeinesque Pendant

About the Item

A Victorian Holbeinesque pendant, set to the centre with an oval cabochon-cut garnet measuring 18mm x 13mm, surrounded by six old brilliant-cut diamonds, set within yellow gold square collets alternating with green, blue and red enamel floral motif, suspending a natural pearl drop, to the reverse a glass locket compartment securing a plaited lock of hair, within a floral and scroll engraved yellow gold border, circa 1870, measuring approximately 6.2 x 2.5cm, gross weight 13.5 grams This antique pendant is in very good condition for its age. Unmarked, tested as 20ct gold. This sumptuous Victorian Holbeinesque pendant was made in around 1870 and comes from the collection of Bentley & Skinner, the London jewellers by appointment to both Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. Holbeinesque is a term used to describe Victorian jewellery that was made in the style of the Renaissance, particularly inspired by the Northern Renaissance and the paintings of Hans Holbein. Holbein himself produced sketches of the jewellery worn at the Tudor court, and the sketches were used as reference points by Victorian jewellery designers and craftsmen. This pendant features wonderfully detailed green, blue, and red enamel work surrounding a cabochon-cut garnet. The frame around the garnet also features six lively diamonds. Suspended from the pendant is a lustrous natural pearl. This piece would look stunning on a heavy Victorian chain, worn as a statement piece. Should you choose to make this purchase we will delighted to send it to you in a Bentley & Skinner handmade leather case packed in a gift-wrapped Bentley & Skinner black and gold presentation box. Shortly afterwards we will send you on a valuation for insurance purposes for your reference and safekeeping.
