About the Item

18kt white gold necklace, edition of 12, signed and numbered. Enrico Castellani has created this necklace as a wearable sculpture in collaboration with Elisabetta Cipriani. Since the late 1950s Enrico Castellani’s work has been characterized by striking relief surfaces called Superficie. The jewellery project came to life in 2012/2013, when the artist created a pattern for a bracelet and necklace with the use of a chisel and a hammer. The geometrical patterns created in these jewel alternate positive and negative space and establish a strong interplay between light and shadow. This incredible necklace is conversational piece and a true work of art. Enrico Castellani (Italian, b. 1930) is one of Italy’s most influential contemporary artists who is also associated with Movimento Arte Nucleare and Azimut, and is best know for his “paintings of light”. Castellani was greatly influenced by the German art group ZERO, formed by artists Heinz Mack, Otto Piene, and Gunther Uecker. His series Superficie Nera (1959) was made with the use of a nail gun, in order to make a relief surface with protrusions and depressions that creates a visual effect of light and shadow. Castellani has exhibited at the most renowned institutions in the world including the MoMA and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; Palais des Beaux Arts, Brussels and has represented Italy at the Venice Biennale. In 2010 The Honorary Patron of the Japan Art Association awarded Castellani with the Praemium Imperiale for Painting, the highest artistic award worldwide. Elisabetta Cipriani – Jewellery by Contemporary Artists invites renowned international sculptors and painters to create exclusive wearable sculptures with the use of precious materials. Since 2009 this London-based gallery is exclusively collaborating with distinctive contemporary artists including Ilya & Emilia Kabakov, Carlos Cruz-Diez, Enrico Castellani, Erwin Wurm, Giorgio Vigna, Jannis Kounellis, Rebecca Horn and Tatsuo Miyajima, Pedro Cabrita Reis and Ai Weiwei.
