Charles-Guillaume Diehl 19th Century French Satinwood Dressing Table

About the Item

A Rare Charles-Guillaume Diehl 19th Century French Satinwood and Mahogany DressingTable It is truly magnificent to discover an original Charles-Guillaume Diehl without the varied ostentation and decorative ornamentation. That is what sets this particular piece apart from the rest of his collection. Subtle beauty and fine craftsmanship stand alone for themselves and are detailed by the parquetry inlay and gilt metal mounts. The hinged lid holds an integral mirror with a birdseye maple-lined fitted interior that would show lovely ladies in waiting, examining their visage as they prepared for the day or practiced their hem work. There is a single drawer raised on faceted slender tapering supports and classical lines. The piece is signed by Charles-Guillaume Diehl himself. Charles-Guillaume Diehl was born in Germany in 1811 and moved to Paris in 1840. It was there that he crafted his famous pieces of art until he died in 1885. His trade in cabinet making and fancy goods flourished. Diehl participated in all major international exhibitions during the middle of the nineteenth century, starting with the Great Exhibition in 1851, and was frequently awarded. In his prime popularity, he employed more than 600 workers designing and producing his highly demanded artwork. The luxury furniture was often found in rare collections of noblemen and women across Europe. The Parisian influence in this piece is apparent in the cultured lines and carefully selected woods. 62 cm wide x 75 cm high. ------------------------------ Condition Report: In good condition and well cared for with only some fading commensurate with ageing. • 19th Century Grand Tour Souvenirs Palais Royale Gold & Ebony Necessaire
    Located in London, GB
Early 19th Century Grand Tour Souvenirs Palais Royale French Empire Ebonized Fragrance Necessaire with Gold Gilt Bottles & A Sèvres Panel This is truly an important and stunning piece of Objet d'art. This Sèvres style porcelain necessaire/fragrance box dates back to the early 1800s Palais Royale French Empire of Napolean Bonapart I. This would most certainly adorn the highest nobility and aristocrats. In the mid-1800s, the best souvenirs from Paris were found in the boutiques of the famed Palais Royale of Paris, the old palace of Cardinal Richelieu. The boutiques lined the promenade of the central gardens, and the area was host to Royals, dignitaries, and the posh societies of the time. The treasures from the Palais Royale remain today some of the most sought-after antiques to be found. The production of perfumery articles became an industry in the nineteenth century when a new champion emerged, Napoleon Bonaparte, who had a standing order with his perfumer for 50 bottles of cologne a month. In the 18th Century, porcelain was one of the most highly prized commodities in the world. In the 19th Century, the Sèvres factory was well-known for its brilliant bleu céleste ground colour. Sèvres gilding is often finely worked or ‘tooled’ with subtle patterns and has a light touch that is very distinctive. This is a superb example of the 1800s; a gorgeous Palais Royale Sèvres porcelain ebonized wood fragrance box/necessaire, finely crafted with two original blue Opaline scent bottles...

  • Incredibly Rare & Exquisite Singing Bird Box Inspired by Charles Bruguier
    Located in London, GB
Incredibly Rare & Exquisite Singing-Bird Box Inspired by Charles Bruguier Inlaid with Gold, Mother-of-Pearl and Enamel 為珍珠、珍珠母和琺瑯鑲嵌的歌鳥盒 For nearly two centuries, miniature singing bird boxes have captivated collectors around the world. With masterpieces being produced by French, German, and Swiss artisans, these delicate and intricately ornate boxes combine the simple eloquence of technological machinery with fantastic artistry. This particular offering is directly inspired by famed Swiss craftsman Charles Bruguier, produced in a rich and vibrant tortoiseshell fascia. The ornate flower petals and nature motif is offset by the vibrant colors and underlying miniaturized bird with an ivory beak and natural feathers. When wound, the front slide opens the bird lid and activates the movement and song of the finely crafted mechanical device. The detailing of the machinery is remarkable, while the pastoral scene adds a sense of old-world charm to any collection. These were highly sought-after pieces of art by nobles and royalty alike as the utility of automata was still in vogue during the 19th century. Charles Bruguier only crafted 27 singing bird boxes a year from his small studio. Although we cannot verify the origin of this particular piece, the matching artwork...
