Antique Georgian Bi-Colour Green Sapphire and Rose Cut Diamond Gold Cluster Ring

About the Item

This unusual cluster ring dates to the the early 19th century, circa 1810. A rare and usual example, this Georgian era cluster is set with a high-domed bi-colour sapphire which displays a predominant deep chromium green colour with areas of teal blue. It is surrounded by a halo of fourteen rose cut diamonds in rubover silver settings. During the Georgian era, jewellers preferred to use rose cut diamonds with large, triangular facets in silver settings, as this allowed the stones to glisten more beautifully in candlelight. The diamonds are in open-back settings (uncommon for the period) which explains why they all still they glisten so marvellously as the light is able to pass through the back, unlike the typical closed-back and foiled settings of the Georgian period which are prone to dirt and grit building up behind the stone over time. The cluster head adjoins to a pierced gallery with scrollwork, applied silver motifs decorate on the shoulders whilst the band features a Rococo style pattern. The ring weighs 7.69 grams, the band is crafted in 18K gold whilst the bezel and applied shoulder detail is in silver. The rose cut diamonds measure approx 3mm in diameter. UK size L 1/2, US size 6 The ring is in overall good condition considering its age, there are some general age-related surface wear, rubbing, and patina to the gold and silver. All the stones are securely set, with some light surface scratches to the green sapphire under loupe magnification which could easily be buffed out and polished by a local jeweller if desired. It was hard to capture the green colour of the sapphire from the photos alone, please see the video for a more accurate colour depiction.

    Located in London, GB
This unusual antique emerald and diamond ring was made in France and dates to the early 19th century. In the centre rests a vibrant 0.3ct step cut emerald in an open-backed rubover silver setting. The stone is a wonderful vivid green colour and sits majestically within a halo of rose cut diamonds in closed-back and foiled rubover settings. The triangular facets of rose cuts were very popular during the Georgian and Victorian periods as they glistened more beautifully in candlelight than any other cut. The central cluster rests in a ‘belcher’ setting with 8 u-shaped curves to create a petal like design. The mount, crafted in 18K gold, is intricately engraved with foliate design and tapers towards the back of the ring with a D-shaped cross section. UK size T, US size 9.5. The ring weighs 7.03 grams, it is unmarked but tests as 18K gold. The ring is in good overall condition condition and the stones are securely set. There is some light wear to the gold as expected with rings of the age. The emerald displays a great colour with lots of natural inclusions; upon magnification, there is also a scratch to one of the corners of the table. The rose cut diamonds measure 2.5mm x 2mm across. The silver cluster measures 10mm in diameter. The ring sits fairly flat on the finger to allow for frequent wear, and the emerald is open-backed which makes it easy to clean! A truly gorgeous and highly unusual antique emerald cluster ring.
