Unique Gerda Flöckinger Pearl Diamond and Yellow Gold Ring 1970s

About the Item

A vintage handmade and unique pearl, diamond and textured 18 karat yellow gold ring, by Gerda Flöckinger, United Kingdom, c. 1970. Signed GF. Ring is a size 6.25 and measures 0.70" x 0.38" x 0.40". The ring is work of art, poetic and radiant. The craftsmanship is superb with the conventional marriage of diamonds and pearls set aside for a newer more modern arrangement in 1970. Certainly a forever ring by a renowned maker. Even an engagement ring? A leader of the avant garde modern jewelry movement in London during the 1960s, Gerda Flockinger has long been regarded as the one of the greatest British modern artist jewelers. She was born in 1927 in Innsbruck, Austria and immigrated to England in 1938. The modern 1970s pearl and gold band ring available here displays the touch of Art Nouveau that Flockinger admired and appeared in many of her designs. She became renowned for her controlled use of high heat fusion in jewelry making, a process she used to brilliant, varied, and exquisite effect when working the surfaces of gold and silver. She once said of making pieces in precious metals: "I strive to create things which beguile the eye, that make the eye and mind travel so you can't ever quite make out or remember everything that's there. And one fine day you come upon an element which you never saw before."Quoted by Deborah Norton in Gerda Flockinger: First Lady of British Jewelry" in Ganoskin.) Flockinger first studied painting at St. Martin’s School of Art. Upon being exposed to the crafts movement, she decided to pursue jewelry, subsequently enrolling at the Central School of Art and Design. She struggled as a young studio jeweler, her real breakthrough coming when the famed Graham Hughes, the art director (curator) of historic Goldsmith’s Hall bought an array of her pieces for their collection. Shortly thereafter, in 1960, the Victoria and Albert Museum purchased two of her pieces for their permanent collection, their very first acquisition of contemporary jewelry. Then, the seminal exhibition in modernist and British jewelry held in 1961, "The International Exhibition of Modern Jewelry 1890-1961" organized by Hughes at the Goldsmiths' Hall, showed six of her jewels. In 1971 she became the first female and first living jeweler to have a solo show at the museum. She was awarded the CBE by the late Queen Elizabeth II for her contributions to art and culture. Flockinger is now 96 years old.
