1990s Giampaolo Babetto Architectural Amethyst Cube Gold Ring 18k yellow gold, 2 amethyst cubes Ring size: 15.25 mm by 15.25 mm (= approx. EU 48 / US 4.5 / ASIA 8) Overall dimensions 2.7 by 2.6 by 1.65 cm (approx. 1 1/16" by 1" by 5/8"); edge length of amethyst cubes 1.0 cm (approx. 3/8") Weight approx. 23.2 grams Marks: Fully signed, dated (1999) and numbered (exemplar 5 of 7) by the artist on the inside of the ring band; Italian assay marks for 18k gold and goldsmith’s registration mark on bottom Italy, 1999 Roughly textured 18k yellow gold sheets form an architectural, strictly geometric conceptualized, monumental ring of two and a half open cubes, base for the setting of two amethyst cubes of a transparent medium purple, which refract the light in additional geometric structures and various shades of purple depending on the angle the light falls through them. The amethyst cubes are set, not glued. Their interesting inclusions correspond with the irregular cross-hatch-and-dot texture of the gold, adding an organic touch of chaos to the constructivist concept. Giampaolo Babetto (1947 - ), one of the leading exponents of the Italian Padua School, revolutionized Italian jewellery design in the 2nd half of the 20th century with his new minimalistic approach to works of goldsmithing. He started his international career as a designer and goldsmith in 1966 with his diploma at the ‘Pietro Selvatico’ State Institute of Art in Padua, Italy (founded in 1867 as a school of applied arts), commonly known as ‘The Padua School’, where three years later he became himself a teacher of professional design from 1969 to 1983, contributing greatly to the experimental approach to goldsmithing, for which the Padua School quickly earned international reputation. Between 1983 and 2000 he taught metalwork, goldsmithing and design at the Rietveld Acadamy in Amsterdam (NL), at Fachhochschule Düsseldorf (GER), at the University of San Diego (USA), at the Rhode Island School of Design (USA), at the Instituto Europeo del Design Milan (I) and other institutions.
