About the Item

Some few precious jewels have become deeply ingrained in our collective memory. Some of them exist in reality, such as the blue Hope diamond. Others exist only in fantasy, such as the „heart of the ocean“, a central point to the plot of James Cameron’s Titanic, 1997. This spectacular ring, a jewel of the Art Déco era, reminded us of these legendary blue gemstones - be they factual or fantastical. A large, natural sapphire of a deep yet vivid blue colour is the focal point of the design. Large facets offset the colour, and a naturally occuring shift in the crystalline structure, visible a little above the centre of the stone, proves its natural origin which has also been confirmed to us by an independent gemmological laboratory. With synthetic sapphires readily available throughout the Art Déco years, natural sapphires were symbols of refinement and luxury even then. Three diamond-set steps connect the large central stone to the shank on each side. The choice of precious metal, massive platinum, matches the preciosity of the gemstones. In gleaming white, the diamonds and platinum work to further intensify the blue of the sapphire. The ring, dating to the years around 1930 and of British origin, is in excellent condition. It was part of an estate located in the South of England.
