Retro Sapphire Ring with Diamonds

About the Item

What captured my eye with this nearly airborne white gold and diamond sapphire ring was the sapphire cabochon; a beguiling little gem that refuses to be called one single color. Some sapphires have interesting inclusions, others have the ability to change colors. This sapphire has a soul. You can feel it. Let me put it this way: when I saw this ring, I was not in the market for a pretty little sapphire in a white gold ballerina setting. But the sapphire cabochon was impossible to look away from. Teal-blue with a little splash of yellow, a little green. And the solid 14K white gold setting looks like a diamond-encrusted pinwheel, ready to take flight: light, airy, fun. Dating from the 1950s, this is a beautifully-made ring. Little diamonds can be fiddly; they get loose and fall out and you can't ever find them so you have to go to the jeweler and have the very specific calibre-cut baguette diamond replaced but the jeweler tells you he has to source it so it could be a while and you're just like, forget it. This ring is set with 40 diamonds and all of them are secure. Here's a little trick I learned: hold a ring set with lots of diamonds up to your ear and then tap it with your index finger. Did you hear a rattle? Loose diamonds. No rattle? You're good to go. The stats: The sapphire is 6.30 mm and weighs just shy of 1 ¼ carats. I see no evidence of heating but we should assume that it has been heated. Four wide prongs hold it securely in place within a white gold pinwheel-shaped face that is set with both round single-cut and baguette diamonds that are eye-clean and white, with most in the F range. It's difficult to measure the diamonds accurately but they must total nearly a carat. The elegant shank features three diamonds on either shoulder along with milgrain detailing. There is additional milgraining along the top of each bezel holding the baguette diamonds in place. Such beautiful, considered details are abundant with this ring. It does rise about 10 mm from the top surface of your finger so it's maybe not the best ring to wear if you plan on cramming your hands into the pockets of your jeans. This could be a great ring to stack with several other simple bands. Or wear it on your index finger so that when you point, you *really* get your point across. Such a free-spirited design and the unique tri-color sapphire is so fantastically cool. The ring was hand-fabricated in the popular post-war Retro style of the late 1940s and early 1950s. Sometimes dating jewelry can be challenging but not in this case: if you leave the ring on a windowsill in the sun, it will begin humming Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy by the Andrews Sisters. Currently a size 7 ¼, this ring could be resized by your local jeweler. Hallmarked for metal fineness (14K) but no maker's marks.
