The gemstone at the centre of this opal ring is an Australian black opal with a strong dominant red, the rarest and most desirable of all colours in Australian opals. It is a natural, untreated gem with a distinctive colour play. Colour-play in opals is the way the gem's colours shift and change as the gem moves. It is the main characteristic of precious opals and it differentiates them from other precious gemstones. Australian opals, in general, are the quality benchmark for the world family of opals owing to their durability and beauty.
