Jean Mahie 1977 Paris Rare Sculptural Cocktail Ring in Solid 22Kt Yellow Gold

About the Item

Sculptural cocktail ring designed by Jean Mahie. A very rare piece of wearable art, created in Paris France by the artist, sculptor and goldsmith Jean Mahie, back in the late 1970's. Mahie's rings with color gemstones like this, are very rare and mostly only created by special commissions. This sculptural imposing cocktail ring has been carefully crafted in solid rich yellow gold of 22 karats, with all the surfaces finished with textured, chiseled and hammered patterns. It is a very impressive, bold, large piece and lends on the wearer a big, big, big... gold look. Amethyst: Mount in the center in a bezel, with one oval cabochon cut (24 x 21 x 13 mm) of a natural vivid purple African amethyst of 55 carats. Weight: Has a total weight of 51.95 grams ( 33.31 Dwt). Size: The actual size is 7 and can be sized. Measurements: 30 mm by 32 mm (1.18 x 1.26 Inches) and raise 16 mm over the finger. Hallmarks: Stamped with French marks, the head of the eagle for the assay and warranty of the 22kt gold, the maker's maitre mark JM associated to Jean Mahie in a lozange cartouche and Signed in full on the bottom, "JEAN MAHIE 22KT JM ". Jean Mahie, is the result of a wonderfully symbiotic and fruitful partnership between Jacline Mazard and her father-in-law Jean-Marie Mazard. They first began combining their artistic talents in 1969, working from a studio in Mouans-Sartoux in the South of France, and launched their jewellery line the following year. Neither was formally trained and both preferred to work with 22ct gold in order to realize their unique style that embodied primitive form, motifs and techniques. Everything they made was entirely hand crafted with Jacline often drawing inspiration from her memories of growing up near the ancient ruins of Carthage in Tunisia. Their bold, imaginative, exotic pieces in richly hued yellow gold fitted perfectly with the bohemian fashions of the late 60s and early 1970s. Van Cleef & Arpels and Cartier showed an early interest in their work with both firms retailing their pieces. Jacline recalls, “Louis Arpels, 82 years old at the time, saw our work and convinced us to sell our productions to Van Cleef and Arpels. Cartier followed as well. So in November 1970, we had our creations in their windows, Place Vendôme and rue de la Paix in Paris, with our name shown.” (With thanks from Hancocks), Collections: Cincinnati Art Museum, Cincinnati Ohio, USA. Victoria & Albert Museum, London UK. Collateral: It is accompanied by a presentation jewelry box. Condition: The overall condition of this ring is excellent. Beside the little normal wear, there is no damage to the gold. The amethyst is secured in the setting and this piece has been carefully inspected to guarantee the condition and authenticity. • Jacques L'enfant for Georges L'enfant Gold Bracelet, Paris, circa 1950

    Located in New York, NY
Gold Bracelet by Jacques L'enfant for Georges L'enfant, Paris, circa 1950 A bracelet composed of interlocking links of polished gold and textured gold; in 18-karat gold, with French assay marks • Maker's mark for Georges L'enfant Biography The Lenfant family is recognized for the master craftsman who produced exceptional jewelry for the finest houses in the twentieth century. Georges began as a Cartier work master before registering his own mark in 1909. His son Jacques joined him as a child in 1915 and became one of the most highly sought-after manufacturers from the 1950s to 1970s. He was particularly known for innovative gold jewelry, creating complicated and bold chains for the neck and wrist for the finest maisons, including Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Sandoz, and Tiffany & Co., to name a few. The company closed in the 1990s, and Jacques wrote a book titled Le livre de la chaîne detailing his unparalleled knowledge of making gold chains. Significance Around the world, the 1950s were marked by economic expansion and social change. After the deprivation of the years during World War II, economies around the world grew by leaps and bounds. While infrastructure in Europe was being rebuilt, there was a new interest in mass media and pop culture. In 1947, Christian Dior launched his debut fashion collection, immediately dubbed the “New Look,” featuring full skirts, tight waists, and rounded shoulders. The designs appealed to glamorous women like Grace Kelley, Millicent Rogers, and the Duchess of Windsor. The new fashions exaggerated the silhouette and called for bold oversized jewelry as a complement. In 1956, Vogue featured an oversized gold link bracelet on the cover, perfectly balancing the effortlessly chic outfit. This is the type of chain that would have been meticulously made by the Lenfant studio. Jacques Lenfant...
