A Roman intaglio gold hardstone ring

About the Item

A Roman intaglio gold hardstone ring, the oval shaped rose-quartz measuring 1.4 x 1.1cm, deep engraved with the profile of an Emperor wearing a laurel wreath, possibly Nero, Roman-set in landscape position to a hollow yellow gold mount with closed back, and tapering shoulders and shank, circa 1st century AD, measuring approximately 2.7 x 1.4cm, finger size L-N (the ring is not round), gross weight 10 grams. This Roman ring s in very good condition with signs of wear consistent with its age. Unmarked, tested as 22ct gold. A remarkable Roman intaglio ring from the collection of Bentley & Skinner, Jewellers by Royal Appointment to His Majesty King Charles III. Sculptural and lustrous, this ring is rendered in hypnotic yellow gold while the stunning intaglio depicting a Roman emperor is engraved in rose quartz. Intaglio, a technique where the design is carved into a gemstone and leaves a hollow impression surrounded by an untouched background, dates back to antiquity. Traditionally worn by men, these rings used to symbolise power, social status or, as this stunning example, political inclination. Today this unique ring can still be worn as a fashionable and timeless accessory, and a marvellous nod to ancient culture.
