About the Item

Extremely rare, 4.71 ct. Gem Ruby determined by AGL (The American Gemological Laboratories), to be Burma, no heat and accompanied by a prestige Gemstone Report No. 1119287 with an A.G.L. Appendix to the same document. Relative to this 4.71 ct oval gem, AGL states that its "internal features indicate this stone was unearthed from the Mogok valley and this gem has a highly saturated red color that is typical of top-quality rubies from this famous locale. The lovely color of this ruby is further complimented by a high relative clarity resulting in a heightened degree of transparency". Of equal importance, this ruby crystal has a generous 69% depth which is becoming increasingly rare in comparison to the many shallow or 'sliver-like' examples coming to market in modern times. "Gem rubies of such provenance (Mogok) quality, size and proportions are very rare. The Mogok area of upper Burma nearly 100 miles northeast of Mandalay is only about 18 miles in length. It is remarkable because it is one of the very few areas in the world in which chromium (responsible for the red color) and aluminum oxide (corundum) naturally and abundantly occur. It is this combination, void of the orange tones that are found in most rubies from other areas, that make the legendary Burma ruby, well, Burma. The special vibrancy of a Burma stone is reminiscent of the glow from charcoal upon which someone has just used bellows. Man has not altered this stone by having “cooked” it. Additionally it has unusually high and crystalline clarity plus fine proportions with a diamond cut. These two characteristics inevitably result in a brilliant ruby. Such brilliance is extremely difficult to find in the market today. This stone has no dead red spot in its center.
