Antique French Belle Epoque Diamond and Enamel Ring Gold Firmament Enfantement

About the Item

A small, delicate and beautifully handcrafted ring made in France during the Belle Epoque era, circa 1900. The design is inspired by late 18th century French ring types known as ‘firmament’ and ‘enfantement’ rings. They were designed by French jewellers to celebrate the long-awaited news that King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette were expecting an heir (bagues au firmament), and the subsequent birth of the Dauphin of France (bagues à l’enfantement). The celestial cobalt blue guilloché enamel bezel contrasts beautifully with the bright white sparkle of the diamonds to mimic the night sky. The two striking Old Mine Cut diamonds are set in platinum and weigh approximately 0.5ct each. In the middle is a much smaller Old European Cut diamond weighing approx 0.025ct. The bezel is bordered by decorative white enamel and adjoins the ring with split shoulders. The ring sits flat on the finger and the stones are all in open-back settings making the ring ideal for frequent wear. UK size E 1/2, US size 2.5 (very small!), 4.74g, French control marks for 18K gold and platinum. The bezel measures 23mm x 10mm. The condition and workmanship is very impressive and the enamel has no surface wear.

  • Antique French Early 19th Century Emerald and Rose Cut Diamond Gold Cluster Ring
    Located in London, GB
This unusual antique emerald and diamond ring was made in France and dates to the early 19th century. In the centre rests a vibrant 0.3ct step cut emerald in an open-backed rubover silver setting. The stone is a wonderful vivid green colour and sits majestically within a halo of rose cut diamonds in closed-back and foiled rubover settings. The triangular facets of rose cuts were very popular during the Georgian and Victorian periods as they glistened more beautifully in candlelight than any other cut. The central cluster rests in a ‘belcher’ setting with 8 u-shaped curves to create a petal like design. The mount, crafted in 18K gold, is intricately engraved with foliate design and tapers towards the back of the ring with a D-shaped cross section. UK size T, US size 9.5. The ring weighs 7.03 grams, it is unmarked but tests as 18K gold. The ring is in good overall condition condition and the stones are securely set. There is some light wear to the gold as expected with rings of the age. The emerald displays a great colour with lots of natural inclusions; upon magnification, there is also a scratch to one of the corners of the table. The rose cut diamonds measure 2.5mm x 2mm across. The silver cluster measures 10mm in diameter. The ring sits fairly flat on the finger to allow for frequent wear, and the emerald is open-backed which makes it easy to clean! A truly gorgeous and highly unusual antique emerald cluster ring.
