Aquamarine Ring in White Gold
I have two issues with aquamarine rings. Issue number one is size. A ginormous 27-carat emerald-cut aquamarine might have made perfect sense in 1957 but today? How can you wear jeans and a ring with a stone that big? What I mean is, what happens if you want to —dare I even say it?— slide your hands in your pockets? This simple and timelessly elegant ring features a pristine approximately 6.5-carat oval-cut aquamarine that is not the size of a book of matches and, thus, can be worn by a modern woman doing modern things like putting her hands in her pockets. My second issue with aquamarine is that the stones are typically eye-clean and because most are emerald or square-cut, when you look at the ring on your finger what you see is your finger through the ring. Flesh-tone bleeding through the gem is NEVER a good look. That is not an issue with this ring. Which is why I purchased it. When you look at this ring on your finger, you see its beautiful blue. It might seem that such a simple 18K white gold setting could be passed over without remark but that is not the case here because your attention must be directed to the quality of this mounting. The mounting features elegant, clean lines with shoulders that taper just so, just right and four very tasteful flattened prongs with oval tops to mirror the oval cut of the sparkling aquamarine. But what may not be apparent in the photographs is the quality of construction. The rear of the shank doesn't taper to a paper-thin line as in so many solitaire bands; it's thick in the back and that's a very good thing because it's the rear of the band that makes the most contact with the rest of the world: steering wheels, doorknobs, skillet handles, scissors, boardroom tabletops, gavels, staircase banisters. The shank on this aquamarine ring will endure for decades. The stone is so tight and secure in its custom-fitted basket, I can't imagine it ever wobbling. Simplicity. Quality. Wearability. Understatement. These are all fine attributes and unusual ones in an aquamarine, But it is, after all, the color which is most important and this stone is peerless. If you look at pictures od Princess Diana's aquamarine ring, now on her daughter-in-law Meghan's hand, you will see that that ring and this ring are identical in color. Many feel the Santa Maria aquamarine is the finest color for the gem and I can appreciate that. But the Santa Maria aquamarine is a stormy, steely, intense blue. This is a lighter, brighter more effervescent blue. Did you know Megan Markle was the first royal in history captured on film or video as she reached over the seat and popped her husband's door for him? In her white dress, with that dazzling aquamarine solitaire on her hand, who could forget the iconic image? That's what this ring is, you see. It's the aquamarine untethered from tradition; freed from its over-the-top retro setting, allowed to be the size of Ricola instead of a Zippo lighter. This is the liberated aquamarine, the singular solitaire with the grace and the power to take your breath away. A perfect alternative to a diamond engagement ring. A perfect ring for your right hands. A much more contemporary aqua ring with a blue so true and pure it has real stopping power. There is a metal fineness mark "750" in the rear of the shank but no maker's mark. The mixed-cut oval is a bit more contemporary than the ginormous emerald-cut aquamarine rings of the 1940s and 1950s. I believe this hand-fabricated one-of-a-kind ring was created in the late 1970s or early 1980s, probably in Europe. Currently a size 5 ½, this ring could be resized by your local jeweler.
