About the Item

This beautiful old diamond came to us mounted in an enormous, over-the-top Retro-era bowtie cocktail ring. We had this ring appraised by Charles Carmona of Guild Labs in Los Angeles. Mr. Carmona concluded the diamond was much older than the cocktail ring. Whatever its mixed history, we loved the look of this big bowtie ring (and listed it on 1stDibs for about a year), but the diamond was just too important for such a frivolous (however fabulous) ring, and made what should have been a $3,000 cocktail ring into a $26,000 oddball. We ultimately decided both the diamond and the ring were in a mutually unproductive relationship. We reset the bowtie ring with a gorgeous (but far more price-appropriate) green tourmaline, and they will undoubtedly live happily ever after. As for the diamond, first we had it certified. Then we had it professionally polished by our expert diamond guy. Then we went about setting it in an engagement ring. We chose a classic platinum three-stone setting, probably made in the 1960s, but we replaced the center diamond mounting with an 18 karat yellow gold prong basket to accentuate the golden green tone of the diamond. We chose this particular 3-stone setting because it has unusually long, tapered baguettes. Unfortunately, one of the baguettes turned out to be cracked, so we had to replace it. Love a challenge? Try matching an old tapered baguette! When it became clear that we wouldn't be able to find an identical twin, we considered replacing both baguettes with a matched pair, but the economics of replacing two baguettes were just too unattractive for an engagement ring. Baguettes in unusual sizes are extremely expensive, and nobody buys an engagement ring for the baguettes, so we opted to match the broken stone as best we could, focussing primarily on color and length. The replacement stone is 0.26 points and our dealer rated it F color and VS1-2 clarity. The other baguette is roughly the same (the dimensions are off by less then 1mm). We are quite satisfied with our decision; those long baguettes are the perfect proportions to show up the size of the center stone, and the slight mismatch is all of a piece for this labor of love. And love has everything to do with it, because this ring is absolutely stunning. The steely-white platinum and baguettes direct your eye to the center and that gorgeous, luscious, important diamond. Its delicate yellow-green color and the checkerboard effect of its older faceting are both so typical of antique diamonds. Rather than the continuous, bright white sparkle of modern diamonds, this stone seems ever-changing, elusive, and even a bit mysterious. There's just so much soul in this ring! Boring Details: A copy of the EGL diamond report is included in our photo array. The main points are as follows: Weight: 3.16 carats Color & Clarity: Q-R / VS2 Cut: Transitional Dimensions: 9.6mm x 9.47mm x 5.64mm Polish: Good Symmetry: Good (Note that we don't really agree with the VS2 clarity rating and would probably give it a more conservative rating of SI1.) SIZING: Currently, this ring is a size 6. We will resize to order for full-price buyers; otherwise, resizing is negotiable. WEIGHT: The ring weighs 4.4 grams. The total diamond weight is 3.67 carats (assuming the original baguette is 0.25 carats). MARKS: The inside of the band is stamped with a standard American platinum designation. There is no maker's mark. MEASUREMENTS: The band tapers ever so slightly from 2.2mm at the shoulders to 1.4mm in the center back. The face of the ring, measured from the tips of each baguette, is 20mm wide, straight across. The elevation is relatively low, about 6mm. An appraisal is included for insurance purposes.
