19th Century Japanese Shakudo Dragon Ring

About the Item

A Japanese Shakudo ring with a lavish show of gold on a textued charcoal gray background. It has excellent finger coverage at 1 5/8 inches high. The gold dragon is striking as it wriggles, showing its claws, from bottom to top of the ring. There is a serpent curled at top offering extra protection to the owner. The Japanese aesthetic was asymmetrical as is all aesthetic revival jewelry. It was always bound to nature. The dragon was revered in Japanese culture. They are wise benefactors and protectors of mankind; and guardians that shield us from universal dangers, . They have endless virtues and are a symbol of good fortune and wealth. They bring happiness, and lend strength and courage in our lives. Shakudo rings once decorated the swords of the Samurai. Shakudo makers had to find a new use for their art when the Samurai were outlawed. Set in Siver in perfect condition.

This is a very rare ring depicting a snake traveling through the grass in the historic Japanese art form of Shakudo, in 14 Karat Gold. The Shakudo pieces originated in the Samurai period in Japan and were created by esteemed artists who made ornaments to adorn swords and armor. When the Samurai period ended, these artists moved to making wearable art during the period of the 1870s - 1900. Here we have a very rare Shakudo piece of a snake traveling through grass. Notice the grace of the proportion of the images and the Japanese esthetic of asymmetry. The mixed metals Shakudo plaque is set in 14 Karat Gold. In the Victorian era the snake was the symbol of eternal love. It has come to symbolize sexuality, rebirth and wisdom. Snake jewelry is highly desirable and collected today.
