Victorian 18k Yellow Gold Micromosaic Dog Ring, Italy, Circa 1900

About the Item

Period: Late 19th century Provenance: Italy Ring size: 7 Weight: 13.3 gr This magnificent micromosaic dates to the 19th century, which is one of the periods of maximum production of micromosaics, whose birth dates back to the 18th century in the Roman context. Micromosaics, made up of small tiles that make them look like real paintings, became widespread as souvenirs for wealthy Grand Tour participants. This example shows the meticulous depiction of a dog, a symbol of loyalty and protection, is extremely rare since the most widespread depictions were certainly the views of the ancient Roman ruins.
