Art Nouveau Jade Ring from China in Silver Certified Untreated

About the Item

A large (24 mm x 12.5 mm) oblong vivid cabochon of certified natural and untreated jadeite jade from Burma meets its near match in an elaborately tooled yet utterly sleek silver setting, handcrafted with consummate skill and impeccable taste, displaying deeply engraved shoulders with a striking and elegantly symmetrical design of abstract flower petals and leaf forms. This is Chinese Art Nouveau at its finest. Hallmarked twice inside touting its Chinese origin— "China" and "MADE IN CHINA," this is no "Chinese Export" piece from the 1930s, those eccentrically ornate wire-work and paper-thin silver sheet metal jewelry pieces created as exotic souvenirs from the mysterious "Orient. " Instead, this is a piece of fine jewelry crafted in silver with resplendent artistry and craftsmanship, right down to the impeccable bezel securing the vivid jade in place. When applied to jade, "mottled" refers to coloring that is in streaks, patches and clouds instead of one even tone. Mottled jade is often opaque and not always beautiful. But this striking and rare cabochon is quite extraordinary: it might as well be an Art Nouveau impressionist painting entitled, "The Fine Greens of Jade," because we have a mash-up of apple, kingfisher, imperial and emerald greens. The stone is semi-translucent but the real story here is in the color: it's absolutely striking. And the light bluish-green body color is the perfect background for all those lush greens. This is exactly the sort of ring Gump's of San Francisco would carry. Gump's opened in the late nineteenth century and became world-famous for its fine jade jewelry. Some carried the Gump's name but the store also carried pieces like this; made by fine craftspeople from the highest-quality materials. It's impossible to say whether this ring arrived in America via Gump's but that would be a logical doorway for such a fine piece that the double nation-touting hallmarks with no Chinese characters would imply was destined for sale abroad. The jade has a fine, old polish. The sides are somewhat steeply angled, further streamlining this already tailored though ornate ring. Nothing to catch on your pocket; plenty to catch on your eye. The ring is currently a size 8 ¼ and could be resized by your local jeweler, who should take appropriate measures not to heat the stone.
