About the Item
This exceptional ring of great beauty and considerable rarity is a sort of inverted “pie-dish”� ring, the mold serving as the box bezel in which the cabochon is set. However, its very fine twisted wire decoration and its large claw bezel relate it to other lavish rings associated with bishops and prelates from the 13th and 14th centuries. The beautiful mauve sapphire is uncut, preserved in the way it was believed God made it. The complexity of the setting, the size of the ring, and the rarity of the stone connote an object of considerable value, suited for a person of high rank.
