Certified Omphacite Jade Ring of "Imperial" Color with Diamonds, circa 1965

About the Item

This 18k greenish-gold hand-crafted Mid-Century ring features a certified natural and untreated, highly-polished, medium-dark green Burmese omphacite jade cabochon that represents jade's most prized color. Two sleek, white and clean (H-I, VS2) tapered baguette diamonds of .30 carats flank each side and travel right up to the edge of the bezel securing the stone. It's a very sharp, distinctive look. The ring is finished in a unique fashion, somewhere between a satin and Florentine finish. It is hallmarked for Los Angeles jeweler George Barmache and dates to 1965. While the 10.50 mm x 8.50 mm x 5.03 mm cabochon is a modest size (approximately 4 carats) it has fully superb translucency and color, vastly superior to the majority of green jade on the market. Much "imperial jade" has been determined to be the omphacite variety of jade since testing has become more sophisticated. This is the perfect man's engagement ring or wedding band alternative. Or just as a right-hand ring. The dark green jade glows; it smolders; it's intense. The condition of this ring is perplexing in that the finish is fully intact on all surfaces including the very back of the ring where rings most often show a patina from—if nothing else—holding a steering wheel day after day. But this ring displays no obvious signs of wear. So I suspect a collector (like me) has owned it all its life. I questioned the unisex potential of this ring just because it is such a classic "gent's ring" from the 1960s, but when I had a woman friend try it on, it looked perfect on her. It did not have that, "I'm wearing my husband's white dress shirt because he's out of town and I miss him" look. Jade of this quality is almost never encountered in life. A masterpiece from mid-century California, USA. Note: I took all photographs in natural light. The ring is currently a size 8 ¾ and could be resized up by a skilled jeweler who can replicate the unique finish or sized down without an issue. The ring ships with a certificate from Stone Group Labs (SGL) stating the jade is natural and untreated omphacite jade from Burma.
