Genuine Roman Heron Carnelian Intaglio 1st-2nd cent. AD 18 Kt gold ring

About the Item

This 18 Kt gold ring features an authentic Roman carnelian (1st–2nd century AD) engraved with a depiction of a heron. Elegant, slender, and unmistakable, herons have long been common in waterways near cities. The legend of the mythical Phoenix is said to originate from the heron, which was sacred to the Egyptians. Returning annually to the Nile during its floods, the heron became a symbol of renewed fertility and abundance. These graceful birds are also mentioned in Ovid's Metamorphoses. According to the Roman poet, a heron took flight from the town of Ardea after Aeneas destroyed it, giving rise to the scientific names of species such as Ardea cinerea and Ardea purpurea. Herons have inspired countless artists and writers throughout history thanks to their distinct appearance—majestic in flight, elegant and refined during the hunt.
