Georgian "Cupid & Diabolo" Intaglio Signet Ring

About

An incredible Georgian signet ring, dating to the Regency Period circa 1815. The intaglio carving depicts Cupid playing with a Diabolo made from two joined hearts, within the French motto "JE ME FAIT UN JEU D'AGITER LES COEURS" which translates roughly as "I make shaking up hearts a game". The diabolo is a game involving two round cups - attached in the middle by a short axle - that are spun on a string attached to two sticks. It was invented in China around the 12th Century, and was first mentioned in the Western World by missionary, Father Amiot, in 1792. By 1812 they were all the rage in Georgian Europe, and it was around this time that the ring was made - cleverly incorporating the current "fad" into the popular Cupid-with-Hearts-and-French-Motto sentimental intaglio style.
