GIA-Certified 1.99 Carat Oval Sapphire in Platinum Edwardian-Style Bombe Setting

Eytan Brandes designed this ring using various elements he likes from Edwardian engagement rings, such as the carinated shank, the coin-edged pavé setting plates, and the elevated, almost bombé face. This is the second time he has used this mounting, and this is the first time he's set it entirely in diamonds. The center prong-set diamond is a clean and beautiful brilliant cut round stone weighing 1.03 carats. The prongs rise from a band (not actually a bezel) around the stone, minimizing the prongy effect, and keeping the stone's elevation at a graceful minimum. The dramatically curved face of the mounting is made up of little coin-edged plates, joined from below. Each plate hosts between one and five stones meticulously set by our best gem-setter. This new ring by Eytan Brandes is a design he made for one of our long-time customers in platinum with diamonds as an engagement ring. He made an extra copy in 18 karat gold because he wanted a nice setting for a yellow sapphire he's had for several years. Prior to setting the stone, we had it certified by GIA, which confirmed the weight and dimensions, as well as the origin (Sri Lanka). Most important, the report confirms the stone hasn't been subjected to beryllium diffusion, which is the current scourge of the sapphire and ruby trade. The stone has been heated, which is customary and creates permanent improvement in the stone's color, but it has not been filled, chemically altered, or otherwise augmented in any way. The sapphire's intense golden yellow really sparkles thanks to a nice mixed cut (brilliant cut faceting on the crown and step cut faceting on the pavilion). The tiny blue sapphires (totaling less than 0.06 carats), set in little "leaves" on the sides, present some nice unexpected contrast. The band is slender and carinated (i.e., knife-edged), so it's actually thicker (1.8mm) than it is wide (1.6mm). A very striking, comfortable ring, in rich 18 karat yellow gold. Eytan Brandes made the gorgeous mounting that perfectly showcases this clean, natural and untreated light yellow diamond. The prongs and frame are in 18 karat yellow gold to accentuate the stone's pale yellow hue; the strong yellow of the frame also creates interesting transitional contrast with the bright white of the halo diamonds. The undergirding and band are in brushed satin platinum -- muting the shine of the mine helps delineate the individual stones and their bright white sparkle. The overall effect is a graceful white-to-yellow spectrum -- the considered product of a jeweler's homage to the beautiful pale hue of this gorgeous stone. The popularity of "fancy yellow" diamonds has been accompanied by the inevitable proliferation of artificial enhancements -- especially irradiation and the use of 24 karat gold backings -- to juke otherwise light yellow diamonds into an unnatural shade most often associated with police tape and taxicabs.
