A pristine, never worn band of finely colored and translucent green makes for a most strikingly unique, beautiful, and durable wedding band. Or un-wedding band. Or stack ring. Or just the ring you buy yourself because you require a bump of happiness. However, I have always envisioned this along with one of the other two carved jade bands I am listing as being Could you really wear a wedding band carved from Jadeite jade every day? Just like an ordinary gold wedding band? To answer that question, I must first introduce you to Mr. Carl Friedrich Christian Mohs, a German mineralogist who picked-up where the ancient Greeks and Romans left off with respect to classifying minerals based on their relative hardness. A diamond could scratch everything but nothing could scratch a diamond, so diamond would represent "10" on what is today known as Mohs scale of mineral hardness or just the Mohs scale for short. Talc is a clay mineral that every other mineral can scratch so it's a "1." Gold is a 2.5 and jadeite jade is between a 6.5 and 7. So the jade ring would be significantly less prone to being scratched. Which explains why the nearly century-old carved jadeite saddle ring I have in my store shows no evidence of scratching or even wear on the rear of the band. This is a high-quality jade and 14K yellow gold ring created in the 1970s. It features a hand-carved 100% natural and untreated (certified) nephrite jade ring in very pale green surrounding a solid 14K gold band. The jade has a luminous translucency that is stunning. The tone is such a pale green some might not call it green at all but more of an off-white. Although most ordinary jewelry stores would probably describe this as "mutton fat jade," that would be wholly incorrect. Mutton fat is currently quite popular and highly-valuable and most jewelers (and gemologists) do not possess extensive knowledge of jade and therefore frequently describe all pale or off-white or white jade as "mutton fat." I am a gemologist but I am also a second-generation jade collector with extensive knowledge of the stone. The nephrite used to create this ring has a very fine grain and is of exceptional quality. Frequently, carved jade rings are left as they are; less commonly a carved jade ring will be fitted with an interior band of gold, platinum or silver. Sometimes it's simply a design choice. Frequently, it's a signal that the jade is special. And that's the case here. This is a very translucent stone with a beautiful, even polish all the way around. And nephrite is the toughest gemstone there is. Two-thousand-years-ago, nephrite was carved into chains —heavy-duty chains exactly like you would buy at a hardware store— from one piece of stone.
