Antique Georgian Pinchbeck Chandelier Torpedo Earrings
Located in Stamford, CT
A magnificent example of history, these long beautifully granulated chandelier earrings are set with amethysts from early c. 1790 and were made in the United Kingdom. They are light on the ear and completely original other than the shepherd hooks which are easier to insert rather than the back to front hooks.. Antique earrings are dear and rare to find in original condition, as many have lost the top section. These earrings superb quality, decorated with tiny orbs of gold ( granulation) applied on the long stem part. Father time knows how granulation adhered without glue or solder. The top and lowest section are engraved in repousse, the method of engraving where the gold sheet is pushed out into a design from the back creating volume and dimension. Floral designs cover the bottom inch of the earrings. The magical secret of Pinchbeck is that no expertise was spared in its creation, rather it took a master of alchemy and ingenuity to create the gold metal formula. Pinchbeck was that alchemist. He was a British Watchmaker. He concentrated on making the first fine gold metal that was not actually gold but became as valuable. He and his son were the only living to know the formula, a marvelous gold metal that never tarnishes, is a comfortable weight and is strong and durable. It became sought after by royalty and jewelry lovers throughout the world. Made only for a short period, it is valuable, desirable and precious. Later gold filled and gold plated jewelry does not match the beauty. Pinchbeck jewelry...

Georgian 18 Karat Gold Cannetille Carved Shell Cameo Birth of Cupid Rivière
Located in New York, NY
Georgian 18k Yellow Gold Cannetille Carved Shell Cameo and Persian Turquoise Birth of Cupid Rivière c.1800 With wars raging across Europe throughout the early years of the 19th century, austerity was the order of the day. Jewelry was comprised of thinly pressed precious metals, and gemstones were either substantially smaller or replaced entirely by something of sentimental value (such as lockets that held a strand of hair) or meticulously crafted cameos. This magnificent necklace from the first 20 years of the 1800s is a masterful example of the innovation born out of the necessities of the time. Each plate is comprised of tiny 18-karat yellow wires meticulously wrapped into an intricately ornate design through a method known as Cannetille, with tiny drops of Persian turquoise adding an accent of color. The center of each plate tells the story of the birth of Cupid through a series of immaculate cameos carved from a single shell. The clasp plate appropriately features a cameo of a pair of hands clasped in friendship, reminiscent of a fede gimmel ring. A shining symbol of love from one of Europe’s most trying periods, this necklace is a gorgeous piece of wearable history. Additional Information: Period: Late 18th. Century Year: c.1800 Material: 18k Yellow Gold Cannetille and Carved Shell Cameo and Persian Turquoise Riviere...

Vintage and Antique Turquoise Jewelry

The thought of vintage and antique turquoise jewelry often conjures up images of striking Navajo bracelets and necklaces worn with a denim shirt and cowboy boots. This all-American look has been celebrated by fashion designers like Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger on their runways and in ad campaigns. In the October 2016 issue of Vogue magazine, Tom Ford said he only wears turquoise jewelry at his Santa Fe ranch. So what is it about this gorgeous blue-green stone that makes us wish that we were born in December?

It’s not surprising that turquoise is abundant in New Mexico and Arizona because, according to the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), it needs to be in “dry and barren regions where acidic, copper-rich groundwater seeps downward and reacts with minerals that contain phosphorus and aluminum.

Turquoise is not found in a single crystal but is a combination of microcrystals. Its appearance, waxy and opaque, is attributed to its structure and composition. “It’s an aggregate of microscopic crystals that form a solid mass. If the crystals are packed closely together, the material is less porous, so it has a finer texture. Fine-textured turquoise has an attractive, waxy luster when it’s polished. Turquoise with a less-dense crystal structure has higher porosity and coarser texture, resulting in a dull luster when it’s polished,” notes the GIA. Since no one wants to set a dull piece of turquoise, porous turquoise is often treated to make the stone more attractive.

In the United States, there have been discoveries of turquoise from 200 B.C. It is not just loose turquoise stones that have been found, but entire suites of jewelry from prehistoric times. In the late 19th-century, the Navajo Indians, who learned silversmithing from the Spanish, started to make beads out of turquoise and eventually combined it with silver around the 1880s. Initially this jewelry was for ceremonial purposes, but it became fashionable once the tourism in the Southwest picked up in the beginning of the 20th century.
