Furthermore, the present design concept noticeably stands out from other Patek Philippe pocket watch commissions for a variety of reasons making it extremely desirable amongst even the most seasoned collectors as it not only possesses an excellent pedigree by casemaker, but also exhibits many of the most desired attributes with which an open face pocket watch commission could be ordered in this period and by none other than the leading firm, Patek Philippe. With a first look at the case design concept, it is not only an ultra-thin case which required special ultra-thin movement technology for the firm to innovate a movement thin enough to fit into the thinner, sportier styled pocket watch case concept -that is approximately only 5mm in thickness, but also extremely interesting is the very obviously noticeable bow design concept located above the 12 position which protects the winding crown and was produced in very limited production number by the firm, known as an “Omega – Form” Bow. Earning its name from its shape, the Omega-Form bow mirrors that of the Greek uppercase letter Omega and is one of the most well-known symbols of all time adding further allure to this piece on a variety of levels. * For reference to the Omega Form Bow, Please refer to photo on listing. If unfamiliar, with the meaning or symbolism associated with the Omega Symbol, The Omega is the last letter in the Ancient Greek alphabet and commonly associated with Alpha and Omega to represent the beginning and end of all things. In addition, the meaning of Omega commonly signifies something major, final or the ultimate in greatness or accomplishment of greatness as many view it also as the endless time that is running out. Having this specific relationship to elements of time itself, the Omega form Bow design concept is precisely the type of slight twist on the traditional pocket watch design concept that one would expect to find from one of the most talented and famed Patek Philippe master casemakers such as Ed Wenger who is best known to inject his own personal touch on traditional concepts for the firm. Although, it may not seem overtly apparent to the novice collector, there are very specific attributes with which pocket and wristwatches demonstrate slight style differences to the case design aside from the dial colors or numbering systems. Overall, the present example is extremely well thought out and under close observation carefully planned throughout. During this timeframe, Platinum was reserved for only the firm’s best creations and their most important clients. With the additional special attention to incorporate hand cut pink gold roman numerals for a numbering system and also a two-tone enamel dial, it only further suggests how premier and highly specialized this order was for the timeframe. Condition The present timepiece has been recently serviced and is in perfect working condition. Overall the watch has been preserved in good to fair condition. The case bares sharp hallmarks with the expected surface scratches to case back and bezel consistent with age. In addition, the dial has been preserved in its untouched original condition and also is in good to fair condition with some signs of patina and light wear to minute track also consistent with age.

About Patek Philippe (Designer)

It shouldn’t be surprising that a Patek Philippe holds the world auction record for a watch ($31.2 million for a Patek Grandmaster Chime, sold at Christie’s Geneva last November, in case anyone’s wondering). Known for impeccable craftsmanship and some of the most complicated timepieces ever created, the brand is considered by many to be the height of fine watchmaking. The house was founded in Geneva in 1839 by Polish expats Antoni Patek and Franciszek Czapek. Czapek left the firm, and in 1845, Patek partnered with French watchmaker Jean Adrien Philippe. It was the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

Catering to the glitterati of Europe, the pair counted among their clients Tolstoy, Pope Pius IX and Queen Victoria, as well as Countess Koscowicz of Hungary, for whom they created the first Swiss-made wristwatch in 1868. They also had their eye on the American market and in 1851 entered an arrangement with Tiffany & Co. still in effect today.

During the Great Depression, brothers Jean and Charles Stern, who had previously supplied Patek Philippe with watch dials, bought the company, and it continues to be run by the Stern family today.

Under the Sterns, the house has developed some of its most famous models, including the Calatrava, an elegantly minimal dress watch introduced in 1932 and named for the Calatrava Cross (the company’s logo since 1887), and the Nautilus, the brand’s first sports watch, conceived by legendary designer Gérald Genta in 1976.

Despite the house’s longevity, it’s rumored that it has manufactured fewer than a million Patek watches, making each one all the more coveted.
