Today's offering showcases this elegant and striking vintage 14K gold Wittnauer watch that was owned and worn by baseball legend and Yankee Hall of Fame great Lefty Gomez.
It has a wonderful mid-century style with prominent lugs and is inscribed on the back, "Connie Mack Day - August 21, 1949 - Yankee Stadium."
On August 21, 1949, the New York Yankees celebrated “Connie Mack Day” at Yankee Stadium. The 86-year-old Mack, revered for his 49-year tenure as the manager of the Philadelphia Athletics, was honored for his remarkable career. Over nearly five decades, Mack led the A’s to five World Championships and amassed a record placing him at the pinnacle of career wins, losses, and games managed. In tribute to his legacy, 65,000 fans attended the pre-game ceremony. Mack, accompanied by numerous former A’s and Yankees, received a watch from the New York Yankees in recognition of his “long and meritorious service to baseball.”
A few identical watches were also presented to other individuals who played that day - this special one to Yankee great Lefty Gomez.
We have not polished the watch or done anything to the outside of it except install a new crystal to give a clear view of the dial...otherwise, we left it just as Mr. Gomez last used it which includes scratches and wear, a bit of dirt, etc. It has all of its original parts. It arrived to us from his collection without a strap, so we have installed a brand new leather lizard strap to make it ready for immediate enjoyment.
One of our Master watchmakers has disassembled the movement down to its last screw and cleaned and oiled the movement making it ready for immediate enjoyment.
