Golden Elapse history: The Patek Philippe Ellipse holds a special place in the heart of Collectability. To us, it encapsulates the essence of Patek - a contemporary yet timeless canvas that showcases the artistry of various craftsmen: the case maker, the chain maker, the goldsmith, the dial maker, the jeweler, and, of course, the watchmaker. Celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2018, Thierry Stern emphasized its significance, stating, "It's one of those watches that shows you how to make a Patek Philippe. No gimmicks, just purity and beauty expressed through simple design." Emerging during the tumultuous late 1960s, the Ellipse became an instant icon in a world on the brink of its own revolution with the impending rise of quartz. Patek Philippe, under the leadership of Henri Stern, foresaw the changing landscape and sought a new design that was unmistakably Patek, gender-neutral, and the epitome of true luxury. The launch of the Ellipse in 1968 was impeccably timed, offering a forward-looking yet classic design that set it apart in the luxury watch industry. The origins of the Golden Ellipse design are a subject of debate. While it's generally credited to Jean-Daniel Rubeli, Patek's in-house stylist, who drew inspiration from the Golden Section, there are accounts, such as Jean-Pierre Frattini's, suggesting that Georges Delessert, the electronics department director, found inspiration in the shape of an American highway junction viewed from an airplane. Regardless of its inspiration, the Ellipse marked a pivotal shift in Patek's manufacturing approach. Unlike the traditional reliance on external casemakers, Patek internally developed the design and then collaborated with Ateliers Réunis for production. This marked the beginning of Patek Philippe's move towards in-house production, a trend that would continue with the acquisition of Ateliers Réunis and other suppliers. The revolutionary cobalt blue dial of the Ellipse was another milestone. Crafted from 18K blue gold, a result of Patek's alchemical experimentation with gold in the early 1960s, it was a material never seen before. The process involved vacuum plating cobalt and 24K gold onto the 18K gold dial, creating a unique and groundbreaking material. Despite its complexity, the effort was justified by the result. Throughout the 1970s, the Ellipse became the epitome of international chic, adorning the wrists of the fashionable elite. Thierry Stern fondly recalls thinking of it as a piece for the very classy. Backed by Patek Philippe's robust marketing, the Ellipse's success was propelled by its classic design, craftsmanship showcase, and the status it bestowed upon its wearer as a member of the exclusive Patek Philippe club. Meeting the demand of a clientele seeking alternatives to the influx of quartz watches, Patek Philippe's diverse Ellipse and Golden Circle offerings played a crucial role in the company's resilience during the challenging years of the 1970s and early 80s. Confident in the enduring value of its design, Patek Philippe boldly advertised a mesh bracelet Ellipse in 1980 as a "$1700 Trust Fund," a testament to the confidence in the lasting appeal of this iconic timepiece. Founded in 1854 in Lucerne by Mauriz Breitschmid, it is a family business. Currently at the helm of the company we find the sixth generation of the family with Raphael Gübelin. Renowned jewellery, it has always been a point of reference for the purchase of luxury watches from the most prestigious brands in Switzerland, including Patek Philippe. Double-signed watches are particularly treasured by connoisseurs and offer great potential for collectors. They also bear witness to the long-standing partnership between Patek Philippe and Gübelin, which dates back to the 19"’ century.
