KPM Faux Micromosaic and Pietre Dure Porcelain Déjeuner Service
By KPM Porcelain
Located in New Orleans, LA
Awe-inspiring hand painting crafted to resemble ancient Roman micromosaics and Florentine pietre dure adorns every piece of this exceptional KPM porcelain déjeuner service. Upon first glance, the workmanship of this delicate technique is so flawless in its execution, it is nearly impossible to discern that the motif is actually painted upon the porcelain. Faux micromosaic and pietre dure techniques were an invention of the KPM artisans, who sought to satisfy their patron's desires for distinctive and innovative designs. Other firms, specifically the imperial porcelain works in Vienna and St. Petersburg emulated this style for a brief time. This particular service, comprising a tea pot, coffee pot, creamer, sugar pot and four cups with saucers, is formed in a dynamic octagonal shape, hand painted with hues of apple green, pale pink and gold. Sphinx finials on the lids of the tea, coffee and sugar pots correlate perfectly to the theme of antiquity. The micromosaic decoration takes the form of songbirds, while the pietre dure panels resemble Roman incense burners...

KPM Berlin Narrative Cup and Saucer
By KPM Porcelain
Located in New Orleans, LA
This rare and unique cup and saucer by KPM Berlin commemorates both outstanding artistry and a humorous personal story. Iconographically, the cup relates a light hearted and amusing story regarding a Mrs. Schluter and her friend and this set was a special commission by Mr. Schluter for his wife. Truly one-of-a-kind, this exceptional porcelain set is rendered in exquisite detail. The narrative of the tale is beautifully transcribed on the back of the plate, relating the misadventures of the two ladies on a trip to town for the opera. Mrs. Schluter's friend, Mrs. Minna Krause, secured for the duo the only set of opera glasses in their small town for the grand event. Upon arriving at the theatre, Mrs. Krause was approached by a seemingly helpful gentleman who offered to hold the valuable glasses for her as she alighted from her carriage. Yet, after she stepped down and looked up to thank the man, he had disappeared and the glasses were not seen again. The quick-footed thief is depicted, along with the ill-fated opera glasses, on the saucer, while the cup features an intricately hand-painted scene of the story as it unfolds. Porcelain from the early 19th century was known to occasionally depict contemporary events, though these pieces are far rarer than the more popular floral and architectural motifs. Done from drawings, these porcelain paintings framed specific events in shining gold and as such often served as personal gifts. Porcelain from the early 19th century was known to occasionally depict contemporary events, though these pieces are far rarer than the more popular floral and architectural motifs. Done from drawings, these porcelain paintings framed specific events in shining gold, and as such often served as personal gifts. This sense, these items had a certain amount in common with the traditional friendship cups. This remarkable set would certainly have been a specially commissioned, humorous tongue-in-cheek gift from the family that lost the opera glasses to the lady who had borrowed them. Both pieces with the iron-red orb and K.P.M. marks. circa 1844-1847. Provenance: The Twinight Collection...
