Originally based in New York City, William Bodfish was a talented artist who gained recognition for his illustrations and cartoons in the late nineteenth century. A painter of genre scenes, he also created detailed illustrations of hunting, whaling and fishing adventures for such magazines as Harper's Weekly. In the years following the Civil War, he traveled to the American West, joining the legion of journalists and illustrators who recorded the development of the new frontier. He was considered by historians to be one of the most “able cartoonists” to tackle the West. During his lifetime, Bodfish exhibited work at the National Academy of Design and the Art Institute of Chicago. Likely created after the artist’s departure from New York, The Sister’s Visit records a quiet moment between two siblings. This is a set of three woodcut engravings produced in 1885 to commemorate the sailing yacht trials competition to determine the team to represent the United States in the America's Cup races off the New Jersey coast in that same year.
These three beautiful woodcut engravings are part of a group of six equally attractive prints, all framed identically in gold scrolled frames with pleasing light grey French mats each with a medium grey band. Each frame measures 16.13" x 17.25" x 0.5". See Item Reference #LU117325094852 to view the other three images. These may be purchased individually for $1,075/each, as a set of three for $2,875/3 or as a set of six for $5,575/6. Any number of these engravings would make for a striking display grouping.

The mark on the underneath (see image) indicates that this spittoon is of Japanese Imari porcelain, manufactured circa 1880, and made specifically for the American market for the preponderance of bars and saloons at that time.
These were popular from 1865 to the turn of the century; this is a particularly fancy and elaborate example. Note the copious and highly detailed and beautiful floral decoration to the inside of the upper portion of the spittoon; pretty fancy for something meant for spit and saliva!
Fantastic and all original condition with no cracks, no chips and very bright paint in sharp colors of blue rust and pink, and meticulously painted in a floral pattern. Several of these would have been “stationed” in strategic places within a saloon. This is a wonderful piece of porcelain, and quality item of saloon and Western United States history...
