The jade carving you see here is no ordinary jade carving. It is a variety of jade known as kosmochlor jade. What, you ask, is kosmochlor jade? Well, it is also known as chromium jadeite. And chromium is the chemical element that gives jadeite its legendary emerald-green coloring. Chromium also gives South American emeralds their legendary emerald green coloring. Chromium jadeite is like jade with an extra helping of green. It's intensely colored jade that is also intensely beautiful.
The jade carving has been certified by Stone Group Labs to be untreated kosmochlor jade from Burma. As the lab certificate explains, "Jadeite, Omphacite and Kosmochlor are distinct yet closely related minerals, commonly intergrown. Western countries refer to all as jade and by their more specific names when identification is possible. In Asia, they may all be collectively referred to as Fei Cui. Kosmochlor may also be referred to as chromium jadeite."

A spectacular -and exceedingly rare- certified natural and unheated Burmese ruby weighing just over three carats shines like a beacon from within the four-prong French mounting. Rubies over one carat are rare, and Burmese rubies are the standard against which all others are judged. The magnificent no-heat Burma ruby measures 9.8mm x 8.8mm and weighs 3.02 carats.
The platinum band is set with eighteen small, bright, and white diamonds weighing approximately .20 carats. There's a French purity mark on the rear, but the band bears no maker's mark.
The GIA classifies rubies as a Type II gemstone, meaning they are expected to contain inclusions. Many are so heavily included that they are opaque. Rubies, like blue sapphires, can also be so saturated -too saturated- that they appear dark. But this stone is bright and lively, a thrilling pinkish-red.
The inclusions within this ruby happen to be fascinating and -depending on your taste- uniquely beautiful. It's a prize of a stone. The stone is bright and displays the gorgeous natural crystal structure of the ruby gemstone. I'm a gemologist, so I find the interior of this ruby fascinating and beautiful and unique. I've included an ultra-macro image of the stone, backlit. It's a gorgeous stone. Keep in mind that the dramatic interior of the stone is hugely magnified in the image; on the finger it's just a beautiful ruby, as you can see in the video. I recognise that not everyone is as delighted by the internal crystal structure of gemstones as I am (I'm a gemologist, after all), so I have priced this ring accordingly. A rare and gorgeous men's natural and untreated jadeite jade ring from the Midcentury. I look at the stone and see purple jade; deeper than lavender. But an astute client wrote me and remarked that it looked more like "denim" to him than purple. I thought, denim? Like jeans? Then I realized, there must be a specific color called denim. I still think the jade looks purple. But I also think it does look like denim, at least the color sample you will see among the images.
A more classic jade ring has never been made: from the sculpted, classic lines of the shank itself to the painstaking Florentine finish etched entirely by hand on the shoulders; it's simply an iconic design. Rendered in buttery 14K yellow gold, this one-of-a-kind ring is hallmarked for Los Angeles jeweler George Barmache and dates to 1965. Most people have never heard of this jeweler but I have: three of the finest jade rings in my collection were created by him. His pieces are rare; but when encountered they are always exquisite, featuring the finest quality jade.
Here, the 16.7mm x 12mm cabochon of natural, untreated lavender jade is a richly saturated tone the gem lab calls; "grayish violetish-blue." The stone is translucent and has absolutely none of the diluted-with-milk quality we often see with lavender jade. And I'll say it again because with lavender jade it's unusual: this is a translucent stone. The best camera, lenses and studio lighting can't begin to capture the unusual beauty of this ring.
