Fire Island Residence

Originally the guest house of famed interior designer Angelo Donghia, this oceanfront house in Fire Island Pines was completely renovated and decorated inside and out for fashion designer Derek Lam and Jan-Hendrik Schlottmann. The original vertical rectangular forms of the existing house were retained and expanded upon to enlarge and open the home to the ocean. The interior opens up to the new outdoor areas of the deck-covered property including the pool, lounge area, and covered dining terrace. The classic seaside look of knotty cedar was streamlined by using clear cedar siding running vertically inside and out. The wood clad walls are punctured with blackened windows and cleft slate floors adding a stark yet approachable minimalism. The furnishings were kept to a minimum with Bauhaus classics mixed with comfortable contemporary upholstery pieces for an effortlessly laid back luxury befitting the beach culture.
