Gold and Agate Snuff Box Belonging to Anne, First Duchess of Buccleuch
Located in Lymington, Hampshire
This oval gold snuff box is inscribed with a crest of ‘a stag trippant’ within mantling of upright ostrich plumes tied with a bow, all below a ducal coronet and above a cypher of the entwined initials ‘B.A.B.’ for Anne of Buccleuch. English, circa 1670.
Provenance: Anne, 1st Duchess of Buccleuch
Anne Scott, 1st Duchess of Buccleuch (1651-1732) was a wealthy Scottish peeress. After her father died when she was a few months old, and her sisters by the time she was 10, she inherited the family’s titles. She was married, at 12 years old, to James, 1st Duke of Monmouth, the eldest illegitimate son of Charles II, then 14. Following the king’s death in February 1685, James spearheaded an anti-Catholic revolt to depose the new king, James II, and claim the throne from his uncle. The brief Monmouth Rebellion ended in defeat and James, by then Duke of Monmouth and Buccleuch, was executed for treason. The Duchess had six children by Monmouth, and a further three by her second husband, Charles, 3rd Baron Cornwallis, whom she married in 1688. She died in 1732 and was succeeded by her grandson, Francis, Earl of Dalkeith.
The style of chasing used on this box is very reminiscent of a signed piece in the Gilbert...

The Lobster’s Quadrille Salvador Dali's Alice in Wonderland 1969
By Salvador Dalí
Located in Paonia, CO
The Lobsters Quadrille is from Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland as interpreted by Salvador Dali and published by Maecenas ( a Random House imprint) 1969 and is from the portfolio of one signed etching in colors and 12 heliogravures with remarque, hors-texte, title page, and text. The frontis page etching is signed in pencil by the artist. The Lobsters Quadrille is in excellent condition. It is a limited Edition 764/2500 signed in the plate by Dali on Mandeure paper.
Photogravure, also known as heliogravure, is a complex intaglio printing process that photographically transfers an image to a plate and then to the page. After the image has been transferred to the plate, it is then etched onto it before being printed onto paper. The results are of incredibly high-quality.photogravure in its mature form was not developed until the late 1870s by Czech painter Karel Klíč. He first included pigment paper in the process of photo technical transfer in 1879 and is regarded as the inventor of photogravure process. There are two steps to the process. Firstly, a copper plate is coated with a light-sensitive gelatine tissue which is then exposed to the light from a photographic image. The gelatine hardens where the light falls, and remains soft where light doesn’t. Following this step, the plate is etched down to different depths according to the hardness of the gelatine. The result of this is a highly defined intaglio plate that can reproduce in great detail the tones of the original photographic image. The printing plate is etched to a different depth according to the finest tonal values, which can be printed after removal of the remaining gelatine using the gravure printing process.

“Pall” Stool by K. J. Pettersson & Söner, Sweden, 1970s
Located in Utrecht, NL
This “Pall” or “Palle” stool was designed and manufactured by K. J. Pettersson & Söner Storvreta in the second half of the 1970s. This model has long been misattributed to Axel Einar Hjorth.
This pall tabouret is made of solid pine wood with several individual parts glued together and crafted into this sculptural and organic shape. Thanks to the individual blocks that comprise the stool, the pattern and grain differs on every model, giving each pall a unique color and pattern.
The seat is carved to accommodate the human body, while the edges are rounded out nicely, preventing the stool from looking blocky. This sturdy pine stool is one of the roughly two hundred that were manufactured in Sweden.
About the designer:
The “Pall” or “Palle” tabouret has long been associated with Hjorth, however, many with knowledge in the field suspected it to be a misattribution both in terms of period and designer. Swedish auction house, Uppsala Auktionskammare finally put an end to the mystery surrounding this stool design in early January 2020, when in their Decorative Sale auction catalogue a model of the previously misattributed Pall stool...
