Early 20th Century Mission San Juan Capistrano - Figurative Landscape
By Warren E. Rollins
Located in Soquel, CA
Stunning figurative landscape of the Mission San Juan Capistrano by Warren Eliphalet Rollins (American, 1861-1962). Presented in a giltwood frame. "Capistrano" lower right, unsigned. This is a study for a larger painting of the same scene. Image size, 14.5"H x 21"W. For many years Warren Eliphalet Rollins was known as the "Dean of the Santa Fe art colony." He was the first artist to have a formal exhibition there; it was held in 1906 in the old Palace of the Governors. He was a close friend of Carlos Vierra, Gerald Cassidy, Kenneth Chapman, Sheldon Parsons and most of the other famous artists who assembled in the New Mexican capital during the first half of this century. Born in Carson City, Nevada, Rollins was raised in California and attended the San Francisco School of Design where he studied under Virgil Williams. At the completion of his studies, he was awarded the Avery Gold Medal and made Assistant Director of the school. Following his marriage in 1887, he and his wife settled in San Diego, and it was during this period that Rollins became interested in the Indian as subject matter. In search of material, Rollins, his wife, and their two daughters, Ramona and Ruth, traveled through every Western state from the Mexican to the Canadian borders. While in Montana, Rollins painted a portrait of Calamity Jane...

Antique Scottish Highland Loch landscape, with sunlit streaming onto the water
By Francis E. Jamieson
Located in Woodbury, CT
Francis Jamieson was a painter in oil and watercolor of highland landscapes and coastal scenes. (The work of this highly prolific artist is curious since the oils and watercolors have two quite distinctive styles and subject matter. The oil paintings are most frequently seen and these are highland landscapes or loch scenes - sometimes they appear to be signed with pseudonyms such as 'W. Richards' and 'Phil Hips' - the location is usually inscribed on the reverse. The watercolors are often coastal scenes with boats and figures on a shore, painted in a more traditional Victorian style, and possibly pre-date the oils. F. E. Jamiesons's beach scenes were published as postcards around 1920 by G. Ajelli & Co. of London on a textured card to give the appearance of oils. Jamieson is known to have traveled widely in the South of England between the wars selling his work but does not appear to have exhibited.) This quote in parentheses is taken from Jeremy Wood's excellent book 'Hidden Talents - A Dictionary of Neglected Artists Working 1880-1950'. - Work by Francis Jamieson can be seen at the usual sites. Please note that on all these sites you will find F. E. Jamieson variously listed as Francis E. Jamieson, F.E.Jamieson, Frank E. Jamieson, Frederick E. Jamieson etc. You may also find some listings under his various pseudonyms of Arnould Pienne, Charles Maurice, Graham Williams...

Le Jardin du Luxembourg
By Marie-Anne Nivoulies de Pierrefort
Located in London, GB
'Le Jardin du Luxembourg', oil on canvas, by Marie de Nivouliès de Pierrefort (circa 1910). Parisians are not equivocal about their park preferences. Some clearly favour the Tuileries, while others stand firmly with feet planted in the Jardin du Luxembourg. Perhaps this is analogous to residents' strongly-held preferences for either the Café Deux Magots or the Café de Flore, just down the Boulevard Saint-Germain. Back to the gardens though, I have always been captivated by the Luxembourg Gardens. It's the lawns, tree-lined promenades, tennis courts, flowerbeds, model sailboats on its octagonal Grand Bassin, as well as the picturesque Medici Fountain...

Two Paintings in One, Art Nouveau Landscape And Winter Landscape. Oak Frame
Located in Stockholm, SE
Alfred Ekstam, a renowned artist from Mangskog, Sweden, is known for his exquisite landscape paintings. We are excited to present this painting by Ekstam, which is extra special because it is painted on both sides, offering two beautiful landscapes in one, with a reversible frame that can be turned over without having to take it down from the wall. On one side, you will be mesmerized by a stunning Art Nouveau landscape with a purple tone, featuring a mountain in the background, a lake, and trees in the foreground with shades of yellow, red, and green. On the other side, you will see a winter landscape with five red houses, likely to be Ekstam's own farm in Knaggen. The winter scene showcases sun rays shining down on the houses...

"The Artist's Wife at the Loom, " Harry Hoffman, Bright American Impressionism
By Harry Leslie Hoffman
Located in New York, NY
Harry Leslie Hoffman (1871 - 1964) The Artist's Wife (Beatrice Pope) at the Loom, circa 1915 Oil on canvas 30 x 32 inches Housed in a period Newcomb-Macklin frame Provenance: Estate of the artist Private Collection, Massachusetts This painting depicts the artist's wife at the loom, producing textile versions of Hoffman's underwater paintings. The screen shown behind Bea is an underwater scene also painted by Hoffman. The study of this painting is held in the collection of the Wolfsonian Museum in Florida. Harry Leslie Hoffman was born in Cressona, a small community in Pennsylvania's Schuylkill Valley. His mother was an amateur artist who encouraged her son to pursue a career in the arts. In 1893, Hoffman entered the School of Art at Yale University and studied with John Ferguson Weir, the son of Robert Walter Weir. After graduation in 1897, Hoffman moved to New York to continue his studies at the Art Students League. He also traveled to Paris and took classes at the Académie Julien. In the summer of 1902, Hoffman attended the Lyme Summer School of Art, in the town of Old Lyme on the Connecticut coast. The school was headed by Frank Vincent Dumond and was located in a boarding house owned by Florence Griswold. The school eventually grew into an artists' colony and a center for American Impressionism. When Hoffman first arrived as a student, he was not permitted to stay in the house which was designated for the professional artists only. However, his outgoing personality soon won him many friends at the colony. In 1905, Hoffman settled in Old Lyme and worked as a full member of the artist colony. He was particularly influenced by Willard Leroy Metcalf, an Impressionist also working in Old Lyme. Fellow artists later fondly recalled Hoffman's antics at the Griswold house, which included playing the flute and banjo, tap-dancing, singing humorous songs, and performing magic tricks. In 1910 Hoffman...

Michigan, Detroit Institute of Arts of the City of Detroit, Tenth Annual Exhibition of Selected Paintings by American Artists (as The Millinery), April 23 - May 31, 1924. Literature: Marion E. Fenton, "Art," Vogue, 54, November 1, 1919, p. 154, illustrated (as Millinery). A painter, etcher, and expert on eighteenth- and nineteenth-century American art, Albert Rosenthal studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, in Munich, and in Paris with Jean-Léon Gérôme. Although his paintings consist mostly of portraits-many depicting historically important American political and military figures-he also rendered modern life images in the realist mode of the Ashcan School, such as Millinery. The subject in this painting tries on one of the large Duchess-style hats popular in the early 1910s, choosing it over the bonnet displayed on the table. Her considered decision-making reflects the importance women once placed on their hats, as statements of social status. (Degas, Manet, and Pissarro also painted this subject.) In 1919, Rosenthal's Millinery was illustrated in Vogue magazine with the caption: "A clever bit of work, spontaneous and vivid and handled with a light sure touch was 'Millinery.'" Rosenthal exhibited the work in the following year with the title In Seal and Sable and gifted it to the Detroit Institute of Arts in 1924, after its inclusion in the museum's annual exhibition. Albert Rosenthal was born in Philadelphia in 1863 and was known as a painter, etcher and lithographer. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art under his father Max Rosenthal...
