Eames stackable fiberglass shell chairs with original brown naugahyde pads. The famous Charles and Ray Eames fiberglass shell chairs are outfitted with their original brown seat pads (cushions). We’ve never found a group of naugahyde Eames chairs in such outstanding condition! That is not to say that they are perfect, but you will be hard pressed to find flaws. The seams are all intact and no rips or holes. The black fiberglass shells are perfectly sound as well. This lot is being sold as a group of ten. That is one money for ten chairs. However, we have twenty chairs in total. Contact us if you want a custom quantity. Each chair bears the Herman Miller insignia, embossed in the fiberglass beneath the seat. Ray and Charles Eames are a pair of American designers whose name is known to anyone interested in modern design. Charles Eames was born in 1907 in St. Louis, Missouri. He studied architecture at the University of Washington and at the invitation of the Finnish architect Eliel Saarinen, he continued his studies at the Cranbrook Academy of Arts in Michigan in 1940. Ray Eames was an artist and photographer born in 1912 in Sacramento, California. She made a significant career as a furniture designer since 1941, when she and Charles began molding plywood furniture. In 1946, the Eameses exhibited their work at MoMA, and in 1948, Herman Miller began producing their designs. In 1949, the famous Eames House was established in California - Eames House was also the place of exhibitions of many famous designers of that time. Charles and Ray Eames have been awarded many prestigious design awards throughout their careers, such as the UK's Royal Gold Medal and the Art Awards from American Institute of Architects. In 1985 the Association of Industrial Designers of America awarded the Eames the title of Most Influential Designer of 20th century. Charles Eames continued his career until his death in 1978, and Ray died ten years after.

This 3rd Generation Eames CTW Coffee Table for Herman Miller was made in 1950. This table consists of a circular five-layer plywood top, sitting upon four matching legs of bent plywood to a near 90 degrees. CTW was the abbreviated name of the Coffee (C) Table (T) with a Wood (W) base and is an iconic Mid-Century Modern piece. We have restored but not refinished to keep the overall vintage look to the piece. This would be an amazing addition to any space and certainly a conversation starter. This piece has been refinished to perfection.

About the CTW:
Released as part of the 1946 plywood group of furniture, CTW was the abbreviated name of the Coffee (C) Table (T) with a Wood (W) base. The Eames CTW Coffee Table consisted of a circular five-layer plywood top, sat upon four matching legs of bent ply to a near 90 degrees.
The plywood group was the first to be released to the general market for adults by the Eames Office in 1946. The furniture was manufactured first by the Evans Molded Plywood Company and sold through distributor Herman Miller. Miller then bought and took over the range entirely from 1950.
The group was the first of many from the Eames Office to consist of identical tops and different bases to create varying choices. This would famously be a theme for Eames design and seen to an even greater scale with the fiberglass range. The CTW had two matching all wood chairs in the group, the dining DCW and the lounge LCW as well as a sister rectangular table, the OTW. The Eames CTW Coffee Table and matching chairs were also replicated with metal legs and so named the CTM, DCM and LCM.
