...
Pair of Chic Louis XVI style side chairs by Armand-Albert Rateau. Stamped A A RATEAU and numbered. Armand-Albert Rateau (1882 - 1938) was a French furniture maker and interior designer. In 2006, The Grove Encyclopedia of Decorative Arts characterized him as "the most eminent of the ensembliers, the high-style designer-decorators" who worked with luxury materials for the socially elite. In 2012, Architectural Digest described him as "one of the most exclusive interior designers of the 1920s." Rateau was born in 1882. Trained at the École Boulle, Rateau took a formative trip with friends in 1914 to Naples and Pompei, visiting museums and archaeological sites. When he began his career with renowned designer Georges Hoentschel, his focus was on Classical style. At the age of 23, he became the artistic director of Alavoine and Company, which was one of the most important French companies in decoration at the time. In 1919, bolstered by the reputation he earned for his Classical work with Hoentschel and Alavoine, he set up his own firm. Rateau's first important project was a commission from the United States, to furnish the swimming pool of George and Florence Meyer Blumenthal. There, he began to work with the themes he had observed in his 1914 journey, creating the first bronze furniture pieces which would come to be so strongly associated with him. In 1920, he began working with French couturier Jeanne Lanvin, redesigning several of her properties, and soon thereafter began work designing for the Duchess of Alba. He became one of the most important designers of the Art Deco furniture and decor movement in France, with an emphasis on Antiquity that also included a focus on Egyptian-based design. Having become friends with Lanvin during his design work for her, he want on to manage her Lanvin-Sport business, also designing a bottle for her perfume line Arpège. The furniture that he designed in 1928 for Lanvin's apartment on rue Barbet-de-Jouy in Paris was donated by Prince Louis de Polignac to the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris in 1965. The entire apartment has been created and is on display there....

This magnificent Swiss Art Deco minaudière compact is believed to have been owned by renowned film star Joan Fontaine. Crafted of sterling and gilded silver, this captivating compact is decorated with a bold floral motif that sparkles with diamonds and ruby cabochons. As practical as it is beautiful, this ingenious case is the perfect companion to take on a night on the town. The cover opens to reveal a mirror and well for pressed powder, a refillable lipstick tube, small tortoiseshell comb and lighter, all neatly tucked into the sides. A small watch flips out on top, so keeping track of time is a breeze. Featuring the engraved initials "JF" and held within its own fitted suede and silk-line pouch, this gorgeous piece is a work of true luxury. Features French hallmarks Circa 1935 2 3/4" wide x 3 3/8" length x 1" deep Joan Fontaine was one of the most exceptional actresses of the golden age of the silver screen. Born Joan de Havilland in Tokyo in 1917, she was the sister of actress Olivia de Havilland, who is known for portraying Melanie in Gone With The Wind. Fontaine was nominated for several Academy Awards, and in 1942 she became the youngest leading actress to win an Oscar for her work in Alfred Hitchcock's Suspicion (1941). Her life was not without turmoil, however. Her rivalry with her sister was epic and legendary. Even as children, the sisters had a contentious relationship that intensified when Fontaine won the Oscar for Suspicion, the same year that de Havilland was nominated. Fontaine's alleged brushing off of her sister's congratulations opened a wound that was never healed, even at the time of Fontaine's death at age 96 in 2013....

"The Yellow Worm Is Longer Than The Red One". Designed by Alexander Calder (1898-1976). Handwoven at Atelier Pinton-Aubusson, France. Edition 4/6. This tapestry was realized by Pinton's workshop in 1970. On the reverse of bolduc it is signed by the hand of Calder. American artist Alexander Calder changed the course of modern art by developing an innovative method of sculpting, bending, and twisting wire to create three-dimensional “drawings in space.” Resonating with the Futurists and Constructivists, as well as the language of early nonobjective painting, Calder’s mobiles (a term coined by Marcel Duchamp in 1931 to describe his work) consist of abstract shapes made of Industrial materials––often poetic and gracefully formed and at times boldly colored––that hang in an uncanny, perfect balance. His complex assemblage Cirque Calder (1926–31), which allowed for the artist’s manipulation of its various characters presented before an audience, predated performance Art by some 40 years. Later in his career, Calder devoted himself to making outdoor monumental sculptures in bolted sheet steel that continue to grace public plazas in cities throughout the world. The tapestry is a support who attract Calder in the 1970s, it was for him a new way to interpret his art. According to Calder scholar Jean Lipman, “Calder tapestries are closely related to his gouaches, but they are much larger and are often more complex in design. In 1912, Dunand learned the ancient and traditional art of Asian lacquerwork from the Japanese master lacquer artist Seizo Sugawara whom Eileen grey had studied under. Sugawara, in turn, was taught Dunand's metalwork techniques. After World War I, Dunand developed a process of lacquerwork as superlative as that of his Asian predecessors. Yet it was Dunand who was credited with the most spectacular lacquer technique of all, coquille d'oeuf - the use of crushed eggshells soaked in lacquer producing a craqueleur effect, subtly delicate yet visually dramatic especially against a contrasting colored ground. This startling teapot mimics the look of a charred birch log with twisted branches forming the spout and handle is created from meticulously carved stoneware by Eric Serritella. Who creates ceramic trompe l'oeil Works in the Japanese Yixing Style from hand-built and unglazed in clay stoneware. Eric Serritella Describes his new work for the upcoming exhibition Walking with Softer Steps with Jason Jacques Gallery as an evolution into the quieter side of trees. "Initially I was so charged up about the birch work that I was a bit frenetically, projecting that excitement in both the topic and its success into the sculptures. The branches were sometimes frenzied, even busy." "While they fit the context of the pieces at the time, my philosophies about the birch changed." "As my artist statement and philosophy evolved, it led me to what was my realization that my goal was to get people to walk with softer steps on this planet. It was this statement that resonated with me so strongly that I then set out to have it reflected in the work." "I'd once had a personal artistic mission to create work that beautifully flowed with rhythm and grace. I joined that with the "softer steps" philosophy to create this current body of work. Within many of the pieces there is a strong sense of negative space. Quieter, simpler lines and movements. A flow. A rhythm. A sense of peace."...
