These digital-only bits of artwork, poetry, music and other media surpassed industry expectations last year, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/03\/10\/trading-in-nfts-spiked-21000percent-to-top-17-billion-in-2021-report.html\">trading in NFTs reached nearly $18 billion<\/a> in 2021. With that kind of (crypto)money on the line, everyone from Soulja Boy to Martha Stewart stepped into the NFT arena. Tech-savvy visual artists seemed especially primed to take part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But what does it take to create an NFT? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NFTs use the same blockchain technology that powers cryptocurrency, making these cyber artworks unduplicable. In August 2021, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/introspective-magazine\/nft-launch\/\">1stDibs launched an NFT platform<\/a>, and today, our roster includes prolific and talented cyber artists like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/the-mint\/artist-profile-karlpoyzer\/\">Karl Poyzer<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/the-mint\/artist-profile-swoon\/\">Swoon<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/the-mint\/tommy-leas-oceans-lost\/\">PLS&amp;TY<\/a>. Here, we dig deeper into NFTs: what they are, how to mint them \u2014 and how to include your own artwork in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/nft-collections\/\">1stDibs NFT marketplace<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Is an NFT?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/nft-art\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NFT stands for non-fungible token<\/a>. A token, in this context, is an asset you can trade for \u2014 or invest in \u2014 something else. Cryptocurrency and minted artworks are both tokens. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A fungible token is replaceable with an item of the same type. The real-world counterpart would be authentication papers for a rare antique. In some ways, provenance is akin to the legal concept of chain of custody. An original can be determined based on the time stamp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The blockchain keeps a record of every transaction that is readily accessible to anyone who wants to see it. This transparency and traceability are among the foundational benefits of blockchain technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s important to note that NFT ownership and copyright are not the same. Creators\u2019 intellectual property can be minted without their consent, but they still own the copyright and can sue the minter for damages. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The NFT is solely proof of ownership. However, in some instances, a usage license may be built into the \u201csmart contract\u201d at the time of minting to provide the minter with opportunities to receive royalties.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NFTs can take different forms, including artwork, music, video and simple recorded sounds, to name just a few. Different types of platforms support different types of NFTs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Is a Blockchain, and Which Ones Support Which Types of NFTs?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A blockchain is a database that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/the-mint\/how-do-nfts-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">is stored not on a single computer<\/a> but across many computers, decentralized into \u201cblocks\u201d of data that are linked, or \u201cchained,\u201d together with several checks and balances to maintain database integrity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is unlike more common forms of data storage, since it\u2019s not owned or controlled by a single entity. You can make a digital <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/nft-collections\/market\/?medium=gif\">animated GIF<\/a>,&nbsp; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/nft-collections\/market\/?medium=image\">static image<\/a>,&nbsp; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/nft-collections\/market\/?medium=video\">video<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/nft-collections\/market\/?medium=3d\">3D artwork<\/a>, identify it as art \u2014 and it becomes just that. Once you mint an NFT, you can put it up for auction, set a reserve price and see how others appreciate your artistry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Do People Make, Buy and Collect NFTs?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The motives for creating, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/the-mint\/how-to-buy-nfts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">buying<\/a>, collecting and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/the-mint\/how-to-sell-nfts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">selling NFTs<\/a> are no different from those in other markets. There are people who are curious and want to see what it&#8217;s all about, speculators looking to turn a profit and artists who genuinely want to share their creative talents with people around the globe \u2014 or, more accurately, the metaverse. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For collectors, a large part of the attraction of NFTs is the bragging rights they confer. In purchasing an NFT, a collector becomes the owner of a first-and-only artwork \u2014 or piece of history. For example, Jack Dorsey, former CEO of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/1stdibsnft\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Twitter<\/a>, famously minted his first-ever tweet and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/03\/22\/twitter-ceo-jack-dorseys-first-tweet-nft-sells-for-2point9-million.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sold it for $2.9 million<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Mint an NFT in General<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Minting is the process of registering a digital artwork to the blockchain to make it a non-fungible token. Each marketplace is different and may only offer certain types of assets, such as an image or video or a specific cryptocurrency like Bitcoin or Ether.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Popular NFT marketplaces include Valuables \u2014 the platform used by Dorsey for his tweet \u2014 which is specifically for buying and selling tweets. Open Sea focuses on digital collectibles, Axie Infinity caters to the video-game NFT market, and NBA TopShop is the site for National Basketball Association\u2013related NFTs. 1stDibs\u2019 marketplace specializes in the visual arts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not all selling platforms are created equal. Some are invitation-only, while others are open to everyone. Some are better for video, others for audio. You need to connect your wallet to a platform that supports the currency of the marketplace in which you wish to do business.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like marketplaces, not all wallets are created equal. You may need to do a bit of research to determine which type of wallet is the best fit for your main concern, whether it\u2019s trading, security or overall ease of use. Some of the most popular wallet providers are Metamask, Math Wallet and Coinbase.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cryptocurrency platform is the blockchain network you connect with. The most commonly used platforms are <a href=\"https:\/\/bitcoin.org\/\">Bitcoin<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/ethereum.org\/en\/\">Ethereum<\/a>, but there are a number of others. Which one is best for you will depend on the type of NFT you want to buy or sell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-heading\">Step 3: Upload Your NFT to the Marketplace<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The marketplace is where you mint and sell your NFTs, pay any transaction fees incurred and receive payment for what you sell. Common charges associated with minting NFTs are \u201cgas fees,\u201d on the Ethereum blockchain, and \u201ctransaction fees,\u201d on the Bitcoin blockchain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These fees may go by different names on different platforms, but both cover the computing costs of verifying and processing transactions on the blockchain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gas fees fluctuate, depending largely on the number of transactions being conducted on the network at any given time. Administration fees are set by the marketplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To upload and mint your NFT, follow the instructions provided by your marketplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-heading\">Step 4: Create an Auction<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the NFT is minted, it is time to create an auction. The process is very simple: Add the title, description and reserve price of the piece, and off you go! Navigate to Your NFT Profile<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>From the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/\">1stDibs homepage<\/a>, navigate to your account icon and select \u201cNFT Profile.\u201d This will bring up your artist profile, where your bio, avatar and social and web links live \u2014 along with all the NFTs you mint on our platform.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-heading\">Step 2: Select the Create NFT Button<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Make sure you\u2019re logged in, and connect to your <a href=\"https:\/\/metamask.io\/\">MetaMask wallet<\/a>. Then, scroll down and select the \u201cCreate NFT\u201d button, which will take you to the Create NFT page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"has-text-align-left wp-block-heading\">Step 3. Upload Your Art<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Upload your art file. It will be uploaded to our servers and pinned to IPFS, or the InterPlanetary File System, a protocol for storing and sharing data. After uploading, complete the NFT Information fields. Once you mint your NFT, you will not be able to edit this information, so check and double-check to make sure it\u2019s correct:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Add artwork title<\/li><li>Add artwork description<\/li><li>Add year created<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You can either save the work as a draft or mint it. Once you mint it, your work will appear on the product page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, to offer your NFT for sale, create an auction and set the duration and reserve price.
