Through a smart contract, an artist can get royalties on subsequent sales \u2014 usually to the tune of 10 percent \u2014 in perpetuity, no matter how many times ownership of the piece changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NFTs represent a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/the-mint\/how-do-nfts-work\">whole new world of art making<\/a> \u2014 and making money. It involves purchasing cryptocurrency, adding it to a digital wallet, connecting the wallet to an NFT platform, uploading the file containing your art, entering some information about it and officially making it a one-of-a-kind digital asset with a click of the \u201cCreate NFT\u201d button. These streamlined platforms are similar to all-purpose marketplaces like eBay and Etsy and sell a wide range of NFT types. They generally have a very large user base and the infrastructure to support payments via cryptocurrency or credit card.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other, more narrowly focused NFT platforms may be more favorable for specific NFT types \u2014 including art. The best NFT art marketplaces typically offer value-added services, including minting, marketing and sales management. Expenses include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Crypto Transaction Fees<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When you buy cryptocurrency to add to your wallet to pay for minting your NFT, you may incur bank transfer fees or transaction fees levied by the payment platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Account or Service Fees<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Some NFT marketplaces charge an account or service fee, which is how they earn money. It\u2019s a bit like a commission, in that it is usually calculated as a percentage \u2014 typically around 2.5 percent \u2014 of the sale proceeds.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gas Fees<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>These are what you pay when you perform operations on a marketplace, such as minting an NFT, listing it for sale, accepting an offer or transferring ownership of the asset.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gas fees fluctuate based on how busy the blockchain is \u2014 they are generally lower late at night and in the wee hours of the morning. They go to pay node operators, that hidden corps of cyber-virtuosos who verify transactions on the blockchain in return for crypto, an undertaking known as crypto mining.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Create and Sell NFTs with No Gas Fees<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Some art marketplaces offer gas-fee-free NFT minting. In these cases, it is&nbsp; the buyer who pays the gas fees. Minting for \u201cfree\u201d is known as \u201clazy minting,\u201d and it\u2019s available on most NFT marketplaces and blockchains, including Ethereum.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gas-fee-free minting may not always be the best deal. For example, some marketplaces that charge a service fee of 2.5 percent for NFTs minted in the \u201cnormal\u201d way will charge 5 percent for those minted the lazy way. Or it could be that you\u2019ll mint the exactly right NFT at the exactly right moment, and you\u2019ll make headlines with a record-breaking sale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Either way, it\u2019s important to note that NFT-art price averages are skewed by a handful of high-dollar sales, such as Beeple\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2021\/3\/11\/22325054\/beeple-christies-nft-sale-cost-everydays-69-million\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">famous $69 million take<\/a> for <em>Everydays: The First 5000 Days, <\/em>in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, shortly after that highly publicized auction, artist Kimberly Parker <a href=\"https:\/\/thatkimparker.medium.com\/most-artists-are-not-making-money-off-nfts-and-here-are-some-graphs-to-prove-it-c65718d4a1b8\">analyzed NFT-art sales over a 10-day period<\/a> on OpenSea to get a picture of how much money artists were <em>really<\/em> making. You may find a contest to enter or a curator looking for new artists to feature in an exhibition.
