Beloved by artists throughout history, the color orange is associated with vitality, warmth and renewal. For New Jersey\u2013based artist Adam Levine<\/a>, orange is also the color of elevation \u2014 and the through line of \u201cUplift<\/a>,\u201d the new NFT show he\u2019s curated on 1stDibs, spotlighting the work of an international group of digital creatives whom Levine thinks deserve a bump in recognition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019ve chosen a selection of artists who are operating at a highly skilled level, making really awesome art that more people should know about,\u201d says Levine, known online as Adamtastic. As curator, he gave each participant the freedom to interpret the word uplift<\/em> as they saw fit, with the proviso that they include at least a hint of his favorite hue in their exhibition piece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhether it\u2019s a tiny speck or an entire visual language, orange unifies these very different styles and visions,\u201d Levine explains. \u201cIt also stands for positivity and the unexpected connections that occur when artists exchange ideas.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Felt like running outside<\/em> by frick<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Collaboration in the metaverse is something Levine is especially passionate about. An experienced animation artist who has been working as a creative director for more than 15 years, he entered the world of NFTs in 2020 thanks to the invite-only, audio-focused Clubhouse app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAt the height of the pandemic, Clubhouse was a thing, a place to communicate and engage openly with anybody. As a new platform, it felt like we were all starting from scratch, exchanging ideas about NFTs at the same time. It was a community and even a kind of utopian moment in art,\u201d says Levine, who is a strong believer in countering crypto-elitism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cUnfortunately, with all the hype that initially surrounded NFTs, the usual people quickly rose to the top, as if it was an exclusive club only for the popular and powerful \u2014 mainly cis white men,\u201d he continues. \u201cThe beauty of \u2018Uplift\u2019 is that the entries are drawn from a wide demographic of digital innovators that widens the art perspective, as [the pioneers of the NFT space] originally intended.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mellow<\/em> by Adam Levine<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Levine\u2019s own NFT for \u201cUplift\u201d is an animation called Mellow<\/a><\/em>. It embodies the same adorable positivity as his ongoing \u201cFluffy Goodness!\u201d series of whimsical creatures who invite viewers to connect with their inner-child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This time, his character is a fuzzy ball of orange, happily swinging in a starlit universe of electric blue and magenta. The meditative beastie is blissfully in tune with his surroundings, and as Levine explains in his accompanying text for his artwork, Mellow<\/em> is about the comfort that community brings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSimple acts of kindness help to drive emotional connections,\u201d he writes. \u201cNo matter what negative outside forces may be at work, a positive one will always travel faster and further, allowing those in its path a moment to relax, soak in life and be mellow . . . if only for a moment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

Levine invites artists to collaborate on every \u201cFluffy Goodness!\u201d drop, allowing them to embellish his cartoonish NFTs with their own visual language, warping, glitching and decorating his cuddly creatures with new features.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This meshing of ideas and styles has led him deeper into the culture and creativity of the Ethereum ecosystem, steering him toward a community of crypto creatives as wide-ranging as it is inventive, as proved by the show\u2019s selection of contributors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Sand Remembers<\/em> by Krista Awad<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe artists I have chosen for \u2018Uplift\u2019 are all so different,\u201d Levine points out. \u201cMatthew Crumpton<\/a> is a Los Angeles\u2013based painter who digitally transforms his bold, striking physical work into satisfying, looping animations. Krista Awad<\/a> is a Surrealist painter who isn\u2019t afraid to take risks. Her work is as deliberate as it is serendipitous, woven together with a unique narrative all her own. Spanish artist Tormius<\/a> uses vivid and defined geometric forms to create intricate patterns influenced by the Polish avant-garde of the 1920s, while artist frick<\/a>, who is based in India, imagines these vast landscapes in which human forms are energized by their surroundings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cRupa Biswas<\/a>, aka wearingfondness, who has a fashion background, often explores the strength of the female form. Her characters are distinct and incredibly vibrant,\u201d he adds. \u201cShay the Surrealist<\/a> is a photo-collage powerhouse whose compositions invite viewers to see the world with new eyes. Rounding out the collection is Oshea Drake<\/a>, or, Izzakko, a 20-year-old artist and champion of diversity and inclusion whose work often celebrates Black beauty and excellence via subtle yet powerful imagery.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

Paranormal Satisfaction<\/em> by Oshea Drake<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n

For the San Francisco\u2013based Drake, uplift<\/em> implies an emancipatory process. In her portrait Paranormal Satisfaction<\/a><\/em>, she contrasts inky shadows with vibrant abstract patterns, resulting in a highly stylized silhouette that adds a sense of urgency to a graceful moment of contemplation. \u201cAs artists, we have the ability to create imaginary worlds and allow anyone to step into them. I believe we should continue to let our minds run free,\u201d she says of her practice, which uses creativity as a catalyst for change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to frick, freedom means a departure from the real and the now. \u201cReality is overwhelming, and everyone wants to get away from it. I wanted to create an artwork that people could escape to,\u201d he says of his first-person-point-of-view video Felt like running outside<\/a><\/em>. The piece casts the viewer as a \u201crunner\u201d fleeing from a place of gloom to a magical crepuscular landscape where clouds are lit by the fading sun\u2019s orange glow.<\/p>\n\n\n

As a fish rises from the water<\/em> by Tormius<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n

For Tormius (real name Adri\u00e0 Tormo), uplift<\/em> connotes positivity and the power of interdependence. \u201cIf one person is uplifted, the rest are, too,\u201d he offers as an introduction to his NFT As a fish rises from the water<\/a><\/em>. His titular fish has a geometrical configuration made up of a multitude of colorful shapes, underscoring his belief that different forces drive individual expression, with connectivity lying at the heart of everything we do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This sentiment is echoed by Levine, who hopes that the show will shine a light on the wealth of creation within the NFT space. \u201cDeeper connections between artists can bring about change that can help to support women and minority artists who are in danger of being left behind,\u201d he says. \u201cThe default in the cryptoart space has been to assume or allow it to be overwhelmingly white and male. We need to change the culture. We need to uplift.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

Alexandra Zagalsky is a London-based journalist specializing in luxury topics, art and travel content. She began her journalistic career in Paris, where she worked on a cultural guide for English-speaking expats. Her first big break was an interview with Lionel Poil\u00e2ne, the late, venerable baker from Paris\u2019s Saint-Germain-des-Pr\u00e9s district who popularized the two-kilogram sourdough loaf and once made a bread chandelier for Salvador Dal\u00ed<\/a>.

Zagalsky moved back to London in her early 20s and has since worked with a number of august publications, including the Week<\/em>, the Telegraph<\/em>, the Times<\/em> and a variety of art and design outlets, such as Introspective<\/em><\/a> and V&A<\/em>, Sotheby\u2019s<\/em> and Christie\u2019s<\/em> magazines. She studied fine art and the history of art at Goldsmiths, University of London, and continues to explore the contemporary art scene, including the world of NFTs.

She has written extensively on the subject of vintage watches<\/a> and describes the Cartier<\/a> Crash as her favorite timepiece. \u201cIt\u2019s a great emblem of the Swinging Sixties and an adaptation of the house\u2019s classic Baignoire<\/a> Allong\u00e9e wristwatch, its sinuous Daliesque style apparently inspired by a model brought into the London Cartier workshop that had been distorted in a car crash,\u201d she says. \u201cI love it for all sorts of reasons, not least because it\u2019s so unconventional and daring, as all great design objects often are.\u201d
