Eldon Dedini
Art Critics and Tourists, Original Watercolor Illustration for The New Yorker

1982

About the Item

Art Critics and Tourists, Original Watercolor Illustration for The New Yorker An original watercolor illustration for The New Yorker magazine by Monterey, California artist Eldon Dedini (American, 1921-2006), 1982. Caption written in ink on mat board: "You are very lucky to view it now - it was just dug up and the art critics haven't had a crack at it yet." Signed and dated "Dedini '82" lower right, and signed on verso. Framed without glass. Image size: 11"H x 18"L. Dedini did around 1,200 illustrations for Playboy and 630 for The New Yorker and posters for the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance annual car show. A native of the California central coast south of Monterey, Eldon Dedini began his professional career doing story board continuity for Universal in Los Angeles (1944-1947), followed by a stint as a story cartoonist for Walt Disney Co. (1947-1949), where he worked on the 1947 feature Mickey and the Beanstalk (aka Fun and Fancy Free), as well as Ichabod and Mr. Toad and several Donald Duck shorts. Returning to the Monterey, California area in 1949, Mr. Dedini switched his focus and became a prominent cartoonist associated with a series of the most widely-distributed popular magazines. In the 1950s he worked as a cartoonist-gagman for Esquire magazine and simultaneously began a five-decade association with the New Yorker. His favorite artistic media included inks and acrylics, and he was quietly proud that he wrote all of his own droll gags. Mr Dedini's cartoon contributions to Playboy, of a softly risqué nature, appeared in that magazine for nearly half a century, from 1959 to 2006. He illustrated several books, including the humorist Max Shulman's now-classic Barefoot Boy With Cheek, (Bantam, 1959) and authored one book of cartoons, The Dedini Gallery (Holt, Rinehart and Winston, 1961). From 1966 to 1973, Mr. Dedini created the poster art for the world-famous antique automobile show, the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. Source: Lee de Broff, Interview with the Artist, January 2005
