Miss Ruby's: Daufuskie Island

2005

About the Item

Signed at lower left: SSYoung Inscribed at lower right: Daufuskie Island The artistʼs inscription on the verso side of this work reads: Miss Rubyʼs farm on the Gullah Island of Daufuskie. An ancient sense of being in a place that is separate from the real world. Time is still. Situated off the coast of South Carolina, the five-mile long Daufuskie Island has for many years been home to a population of slave descendants known as the Gullah. Because the island is relatively isolated and accessible only by ferry, the Gullah culture (reflecting strong Central and West African influences) and language (an English-based creole language with African roots) and culture have flourished there. Image dimensions: 29 ¼ x 21 ½ inches Framed dimensions: 45 x 37 inches Signed and dated at lower left: SSYoung / 99' Island Games (Lucky Shot) depicts a pair of young Bahamian boys engaged in a game of marbles, one of the artist's signature themes. Scholar William Gerdts writes: In these works, Scott not only depicts young individuals engaging in a popular activity but shows their intensity and competitiveness while conveying their camaraderie. The pictures are not so much about "winners" and "losers" as about the boys' concentration on the game and the interest shown by onlookers....The sense of community evoked in the series suggests that playing marbles...

The framed artwork measures 22 1/2 x 17 1/2 x 1 in. “Mere depiction of social and cultural issues is not enough. My work has to create something that goes beyond simple perception. To make a strong statement, art needs timeless aesthetic qualities. These can take any subject matter to a higher level of experience. That is the essence of what I am pursuing.” – Masami Teraoka Born in Onomichi in Hiroshima Prefecture, Teraoka studied at what is now Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles. His works are inspired by Japanese Ukiyo-e woodcut prints. However, Teraoaka infuses the style and techniques of the traditional art with American Pop Art.
