Black eye – Jolanta Johnsson, experienced Polish artist, graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, PhD of fine arts, university teacher. She currently lives in Sweden. This is how she writes about this drawing:
The Black Eye flower drawing is in black and white. I was drawn in pen and ink. Is this the proper technique for depicting flowers? The flowers are colourful. Their beauty comes from their form, colour and scent. They are a wonder of nature. Nature is inventive in creating flowers. And to think that flowers perform an important helpful function – they help plants to reproduce. All these fanciful forms, colours, scents, petals, stamens, and pistils, are there to attract an insect or any other animal that will move the fragile structure of the flower and pollinate it. The sweet taste of the nectar and the scent of the flower play a decisive role in this process. I admire flowers and do not need to remember their importance in the life cycle of a plant. Observing the structure of a flower occupies so much that my attention is focused on its design. Of course, the center of the flower attracts the most attention, especially when it is a sunflower. I look at it and it seems to be looking at me with that big black round eye of its and invites me to draw sunflower eye drawing.
I reach for a pen and ink and draw a picture of the flowers as if I were an architect drawing the structure of a building. I create a flower drawing. This time, I am not a colourist, no Claude Monet lilies are present in the drawing. Two starry flowers are looking with their black eye.
This drawing is an example of my fascination with these flowers. I feel that I have not fully expressed it through individual drawings. I am sure that in the future flower drawings sunflower will occupy a prominent place.

Jolanta Johnsson
Jolanta Johnsson is a Polish painter, who was born in 1955. She studied at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts in the years 1984–89, in the graphic studios of professor Halina Chrostowska and professor Rafal Strent and the painting studio of professor Jerzy Tchorzewski. She gained a Ph.D. in visual arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow in 2012. Currently, she runs a graphic arts and design workshop at the European Faculty of Arts at the Vistula Academy of Finance and Business. Her works have been exhibited at numerous exhibitions, including in the United States, Sweden, Germany, Austria, the Netherlands and Greece.

As the sun sets, its round disc descends towards the horizon to eventually disappear behind it completely. This is when it changes colors, which become more and more intense. This spectacle is always interesting, each time different. No two sunsets are the same. One day it was so beautiful that it inspired me to make this drawing. That day was today, so I titled it Sunset Today. It is a symbolic title. It acts as a kind of reminder – the sun will also be set today.
